Weather Underground widget

Available in the app store! For the vivoactive and new forerunners!

This will provide access to data from thousands of weather stations in the "Weather Underground". Only tested in the US, but I understand it's available in many other locations.

Not just the weather in your town, but it could be your own back yard, if you have a weather station connected to WU!

To use this widget, you WILL NEED an "APIKEY" from WU. You can get one for no cost but only if if have a weather station that sends data to WU,

.
Many of the following posts are for the old version of this widget which is no longer available, so check at the end for info on the new version.

  • I am very interested is in using this over the stock weather app. As a cyclist, wind speed and direction is importation. But I am stuck trying to get a "API KEY", FROM WEATHER UNDERGROUND. I have a account and I understand I can sign up for free. But its asking me for a project name and my website. all i can say is "huh"? I don't understand.

Seems you just need to enter ANYTHING for those two field..... Then you get a apikey. That's a WU thing and not me. :)

:) Now don't I feel stupid. Worth it though, It worked.

    Thanks
  • Been happily using this great app for a while now. Recently, my API key disappeared from my configuration. I've re-entered it, (and used Garmin Express to run an update to ensure everything is current) but now I consistently get a "Data Error:-300" whenever I access the app (after getting the initial "Requesting Data from Weather Underground" screen.)

That can mean a few things. The -300 is actually what I see for "NETWORK_REQUEST_TIMED_OUT"

Make sure you entered the API key with no typos, of upper/lower case issues and no training space. But you'd likely see a different error in that case.

I've also hear of this error if you have your watch paired not only in GCM, but also in your phone settings (it should only be paired in GCM).

And then it could also be the network - you're phones data connection to the internet, or the WU server might be down or backed up.

You said that it lost the initial settings. Have you power cycled your watch since then? Something odd happened that they were lost (the widget only reads them). If still no-go, try uninstalling and then re-installing the widget so it's a clean start for my another file I use too..
  • Thanks for the quick response. I'll double check my API key - I did do a copy and paste of it, so it is possible I picked up a trailing space.
I get the network error very quickly, so it isn't behaving as I'd expect a time out to behave in terms of timing. I have done a power cycle of the Vivoactive since doing the Garmin Express synch. If the problem persists - and it has now for several hours - I'll try a fresh install. My phone has a solid internet connection, but backups at WU are certainly a possibility.

I had some strange behavior a couple of weeks ago with my VA, including locking up in the "updating" state, and I suspect that scrambled the API key; it also re-ordered all my apps.

Thanks again for the quick response.
  • Hmm. Using Garmin Express, I deleted the widget. Did a synch, then reinstalled and synched again. Configured the app - still in Garmin Express - with the API key, no leading or trailing spaces, and synched again. I continue to get the Data Error:-300 message almost immediately after the app opens.
  • I'll try to port it to the f3, but right now, it's for the va and the new forerunners. I "think" the F3 should work fine, but I've never even seen an f3! If I do post a f3 version, be kind! :)

Update: just tried it in the Simulator for the f3, and I'll have to play around with fonts for it, so it could take a few days.

Was wondering if you had abandoned getting this going on the F3?
  • To be honest, I never really even started trying to do the F3. I've updated this widget for devices like those I already support (the 735 and va-hr for example), and been spending most of my time working on other apps I have. So far, I think I've only had a couple requests for the f3 and the rest of the devices like it, and never made it rise on my list of things to do.
  • Fair enough. I would imagine most F3/F3HR users wouldn't even know about the app since it won't show if you only select those devices when browsing the IQ store. I didn't even know this section of the forum existed, until today. And, hence, the app :D
  • I'm another interested Fenix 3 owner (as the built-in widget just gives nonsense)!
