App: Hiking

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/39d3b5e8-67db-4517-93a8-5ec485269635

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

  • The HRM "should" only show up with the watch it's paired with (that's the purpose behind the pairing).

Could it be that at some point, some how, it got paired to both yours and your wife's? (with the "proximity pairing" in the 230, it's quite easy to do by mistake - just be in "sensors and accessories" when your HRM is too close, as you don't have to activity search for sensor to pair it)

If it's not paired to your wife's watch, it shouldn't show up in "Sensors and Accessories" at all on hers (not even as disconnected).
You can delete the pairing on hers, as this could impact other things you do together with one HRM.

In hike, I simply say if it is paired (a HRM or Tempe) use it if it's transmitting. If you share a single HRM at separate times, hike doesn't handle if you're both together, but in the future I could add an app setting to ignore the pairing for the HRM.

(disconnected or off simply means that it's paired, but not connected, but can start listening for data if requested to do so.)
I'll also do some more research on this...
  • Hello
erősít a rossz kilométeres távolságot. Amikor az óra pihen a pincében, akkor is megy a kilométer-számláló. Miért? Nincs más tevékenységet nem folytat. Email szívesen elküldi a rögzített adatokat. Az egész tevékenység nem 10 km, ahelyett, hogy csaknem 25 kilométerre felvett

Ok, here's what I think you are saying:

You go out and do 10km, and then take off the watch (while hike is still running) and when you upload it, it shows 25km.

This can happen - because even if the watch is on a table and not moving, if the app is left running and recording, small difference in GPS signals will add distance over time.

If you take off the watch or go indoors, you can press the "start" button (upper right side) and that will pause the recording, and select "resume" when you want to start recording again.

If you are done with your hike, press the "start" button, and choose "save" to end the recording and save it.
  • jim_m_58, Thanks for the info on how your app uses the sensors. I am familiar with paring ANT sensors since this is our 5th garmin unit for each of us (3 edge and 2 FR devices). This is our first device with the sensor pool and connect IQ so I was not sure if that changed the behaviors a little. I seem to have had a different experience than others because both my watch and my wife's has been supper easy to pair sensors. Even pairing sensors I did not expect/want to pair (i.e. proximity well beyond an arms length away still successfully paired). I have now removed my HRM from her watch and left her HRM paired. Hopefully this will allow it to behave more like I expected it to.

I think what may have been throwing me off is anytime you are in the sensor and accessories menu it adds every active sensor it can see to the pool. My past devices I had to tell it to look for devices to add. The lesson here is to remove any sensor you don't want it to be able to use then don't open the sensor and accessories menu.
  • jim_m_58, Thanks for the info on how your app uses the sensors.

In the next version, I plan on adding app settings to not attempt to use the HRM For example, "Use HRM if available (true/false)"

(I'll probably do the same for the Tempe and footpod)

There's no way for me to know things are off in the FW settings, but this is a way I can know.

It's actually a simple change, but I'm middle of adding a whole new (and far better!) way to display the chart (you'll see your route, even if you don't mark a single waypoint), so it may be a week or two before I can get it in the store.
  • paused and then .. whats the time ??

    Hi,

I tried your Hike-app on some of my tracks - it works well, very well.

The one and only thing I miss is, when in paused-state there is now way to see current time (clocktime).

E.g. you walk a round, come to a alpin hut and stay there for a period but you want your compelete round as one activity in Garmin Connect - so therefore you need to pause Hike. And now, you see Save, Resume, Dismiss but now Time information during that paused period.

Or did I miss something is that possible already ??

When you pause hike, there is a menu, but you can then press the back button at that time, and return to the normal screens. The recording will remained paused, but you can see all the data, including the time.

Pressing start again, brings back the menu, allowing you to resume the recording.

    Waypoint Limit ?

Hi jim - am loving the app,

Is there a limit of 25 waypoints possible on any route ?
I have twice now gone for hikes and recorded each decision point by marking a waypoint.
In both cases the app records 25 then refuses to record any more.
The app is still fully functional otherwise.

  • Yes, there is a max of 25 waypoints, but may up that in the next version (maybe to 30?). On the first screen, you'll see "WPs x of 25". How many would be good for you?

The next version does have a feature that shows you a much better chart so you may not need more.

Using more memory for WPs isn't an issue. It's actually displaying more on the screen that gets harder.
  • during pause .. temperature recording

    Hi,

I use Garmin Tempe on my FR230 to record temperatures, that works well during recording activity.
But it looks like that the temperature recording changes during pause-state of hike-app.

Arriving at the alpin hut, I pressed pause - but the temperature stays the same - and then after resumeing temperature starts where it stopped before ??

    See enclosed picture:

    How about that ?

    Hi Jim,

I do a lot of hiking. 2-4 hours usually - often with my dog. The way I use the app is to mark a "decision point" so that I know where I've been and how far each decision is (to write instructions for others). I've previously used the breadcrumbs widget which is also excellent for me. A decision point might be a path crossing, gate or simply a stile or landmark. DWMap is great for road based walks but is not much use in the wild. I can burn through waypoints quite quickly in woodland so 30 would be little different to 25. I'm only interested in the graphical display (for recovery) , the distance and altitude from the last waypoint and the overall distance.

At this time of year one of the main uses is to answer how quickly should I turn back given the amount of light left.
There's no concept of laps for me. Looking forward to future versions.

    Thanks for a great app.

I'd love to be able to export the map, GPS waypoint list for subsequent upload and mapping.
