App: Hiking

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

  • No GPS at FR230 3.30 "waiting for GPS" .. should be there

The logic to turn on GPS and wait for it is actually quite simple, and the only thing I can think of is that you weren't in a location with stong enough GPS signals (I not only wait for GPS, but also a "good" signal - some other things may just wait for any level of quality in GPS, including "last location")

    I've considered that already.
But when I switch to another activity (e.g. Running - a standard activity at my FR230) at the same location (e.g. in my office, outside or in my car) it catches GPS, except when I use Hike 0.12c as activity, then there is no GPS catched.

I tried these different locations with Hike 0.12c but not change - still waiting for GPS everywhere.

    Any clues ??

    regards

    J.M.
  • The only think I can think of, is that Hike waits for a good GPS fix, and maybe the native stuff just waits for any GPS data (you will see bars on the toast for GPS quality with standard apps).
  • was "no GPS" .. everything is ok on FR230, Waypoints

    Hi,

you're right, after a while (and in that time getting a good GPS-Signal), everything works fine on my Forerunner 230 (exactly: Garmin Forerunner 230, 3.30 00d4e0b, GPS: 3.00, Display: 2.10, Bluetooth/ANT: 2.10, Connect IQ: 1.2.1).

Can you tell me how I can access those marked waypoints - I can see the track in connect, but there is no information regarding that waypoints (I marked 6 of them and saw them on FR230 but not online in GC) ??

I tried an export to GPX and to TCX and imported that to Basecamp, I've no idea how to access that set waypoints.
How to achive that aim ??

    Regards

    J.M.

In Garmin Connect, when you view the map of your activity, turn on laps.

When you mark a waypoint, it creates a lap mark in the .fit file. If you look at splits, you'll also see time and distance between waypoints.
  • waypoints as Lap .. exporting to GPX, TCX or FIT ??

ok yeah, that works - I see all my waypoints as laps in GC-Online.
But when I export them (I tried GPX, TCX and FIT) and reimport it to Basecamp I still cant see those laps (Waypoints).

How to export those laps (my waypoints) to GPX, TCX or FIT ??

I need them for further elaboration.

The only way possible for me to mark them in the .fit file (that's synced to GC), is to mark them as laps. When you export it, unless there's a way to save the lap marks, as well as an option when basecamp imports the file to understand the laps, it's probably not possible. BTW, you can just grab the .fit from your watch (it's in the \garmin\activity folder, with the proper time stamp but an odd name), and avoid the import/export in GC.
  • waypoints as Lap .. exporting to GPX, TCX or FIT ?? .. kml is the solution

    Hi,

it works with KML-Export (Export to Google Earth) and that files are importable to Basecamp.

    With this steps

    a) switch LAPS on in Garmin Connect (Webbrowser)

    b) Export to Google-Earth

    c) Import to Basecamp

it is possible to get those waypoints set in Hiker by pressing "Back-Button" (on my Forerunner 230).

Its great, thank you very much .. thats exactly what I need.

  • Thanks for the tip to retrieve the waypoints.

    Hello
erősít a rossz kilométeres távolságot. Amikor az óra pihen a pincében, akkor is megy a kilométer-számláló. Miért? Nincs más tevékenységet nem folytat. Email szívesen elküldi a rögzített adatokat. Az egész tevékenység nem 10 km, ahelyett, hogy csaknem 25 kilométerre felvett
  • Two devices running Hike app and 1 HRM

Last night I had my first opportunity to observe a weird behavior that I did not know how to stop. Here is the situation. Both my wife and I have FR230s and I have this Hike app installed on both. I was wearing my HRM but she was not. Since we were going on a walk together, I decided it would make it easier to upload if we used the hike app to record our walk. I walked her through using the app since this was the first time she has used it. While we were switching the activity type to walk, I noticed that her watch had paired to my HRM strap. I exited out of the app and checked the sensor pool and my strap existed in her watch, but was set to off. when I want back into the app, it once again connected to my HRM. There is not an obvious way to disconnect the HRM once you start the app. Since I am not familiar with how to write apps in connect IQ, I have a few questions regarding how sensors get selected and associated with the app.

How does the connect IQ app decide which sensors to pair with?
Does it use the sensor pool or does the developer have to manage the ANT+ sensors within the app?
If there are two sensors of the same type (i.e. HRM), how do we ensure it is associated with the right watch?
How long does the app search for sensor before it gives up?

In this case my HR showed up on by watch and my wife's watch. In the future, I could see my watch showing her HR and her watch showing mine. In the garmin running apps, I can set the sensor status to "off" and the watch will disable that sensor, thus allowing me to control which sensors the watch might see, but don't want to ever connect with.

Anyway I thought it was an interesting problem to sort out.
