App: Hiking

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/39d3b5e8-67db-4517-93a8-5ec485269635

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

  • Hi Jim,

any updates already regarding super power mode?
  • Tried a few different things and turning on GPS every few minutes and then turning it off doesn't work (the GPS data isn't in the .fit or at least isn't displayed in GC, speed and distance is odd, etc), so no go on low power mode...
  • These are really bad news. Thanks for your effort.
  • Any plans to bring Auto lap to Hike from Hike2?
  • Adding auto-lap to Hike is something I'm looking to add at some point. I wanted to add it to Hike2 first to see if it worked for people.

Also, "Simple Walk" https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/028c5a06-48ed-4a5d-9910-236a7ef10ce0 has auto-lap (it works on all the Hike and Hike2 devices (well, not the original va), including a few more!).
Simple walk only records walking and has the basics of Hike as far as data.
  • Version 0.15a

The change here is to add an option for auto laps.

The main screen changed a bit to display the lap count. It's next to the distance. When first starting, you'll see "L:0" as you have no laps. If the background/foreground are inversed, they are auto laps. If not, they are the same as waypoints.

Use app settings in Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile to set up auto-lap. You have the option for .5, 1, or 5 (km's or miles based on the distance units on your watch)

    Hi,

Can you consider a screen with less details and a larger font.

I essential information that would work for me are:

    1. Time
    2. Distance walked
    3. <additional data>

    Thanks,
    Alan
  • Alan - which device do you use? (I'm no spring chicken and worn glasses for decades myself :) ) The font on the va is kind of small, I know, and maybe I can add an extra screen to it - kind of a "summary" screen. The font sizes are fairly limited. Basically in this app I can use SMALL, MEDIUM, and LARGE, and have no memory available for any custom fonts.

    Hi Jim,

I use the Garmin FR 235. I've worn glasses all my life except for a short (and miserable) stint with contacts (but I don't want to go off topic here). My eyes are deteriorating from both ends of the spectrum now :-)

BTW I really like your design decision not to start recording until you get a fix on the GPS. With the "default" tracking the device starts recording before a fix has taken place and the initial points end up in the middle of the ocean near Africa. I learn about this after posting to the forum.

    Thanks and take care

  • Alan - you may want to check out my Simple Walk.

It's a scaled down version of Hike (it only will record walking and not hiking, doesn't have a "waypoint" ability, and has fewer data screens.). The reason being, it that Hike is getting tight on memory, and adding a screen like you want would be easier in Simple Walk. The main screen looks like a watchface(with the typical things), but does also have time and distance (but it's still not that large). The next screen has more data, but is getting a bit crowded on some watches, so I've been thinking of splitting that into 2 or more screens. Like Hike, it's got the "chart" screen so you can see the route you've taken (also where laps are marked), and the 3rd screen, your lat/lon, and distance and direction to where you started.

As far as waiting for GPS before a user can start recording, that's something I've always done in GPS apps, as in my own testing things could look off if you got a ways into a walk/hike before getting good GPS data. :) (it could really mess up direction and distance to start and the chart of your route for example)
