App: Hiking

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/39d3b5e8-67db-4517-93a8-5ec485269635

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

Make sure you have the most recent version loaded on your watch. If you look at "Hike" from your phone, it will show the current version in the store, but that may not be what's actually on your watch.

The top line of the screen in hike shows the current version you are running and should be 0.14i. To be sure, you can uninstall Hike and re-install it, as that insures you have the newest version.
  • Kind Request :)

Hi, I can't seem to lock the unit while on the move using the Hike app. It would be very nice if this functionality could be added. That would prevent unvoluntary cancellations/pauses caused by clothes etc. pushing the buttons. Other than that I like the app a lot!

I put the above quote as a reminder :) and would like to second that idea :)

Hike was the first app I have added and I like it a lot. It is great.

However, the possibility to lock the controls would be a great improvement; it happens that the buttons are pressed accidentally, e.g. in difficult terrain when you help your companions or just reach for the backpack, etc.

Would it be possible that you make the option to lock all the buttons / controls ???

Again, Thank You for the otherwise great app :)
  • Just moved from an FR235 to the Fenix 3HR.

Is there any way to get this to install on the Fenix 3 HR please?

This is the one app I used over all others on the FR235 and I loved it.

I've considered this before, but the problem is that no matter what I can do (in CIQ), the unlock would be just like any other bad press, etc... So you'd just accidentally do the unlock, and then have the same problem.. :(

The round screen of the f3 just simply wouldn't work with the current code, and I'm not ready to do a separate version for the round screen..

    Sorry...

    Hi There,

I'm running the most up to date version of the app. I will try it a few more times this week and see if I can replicate the issue. Thanks
  • Actually, the 735 was probably an "auto-migration" by the app store. It appears if something supports the 235, the 735 was added automatically.

Once I learn some of the details about the 735, I may remove it from Hike, but add it to Hike2 (which would be very quick). The thing I'll look at is the amount of memory an app can use, and if it's like the va-hr memory wise, it will use Hike2 (more memory means more features! :) ), and I'll remove support for it from Hike.

Hike2 is already set to handle a semi-round, like the 735.
  • Don't worry. Hike2 is already in the store for the va-hr, and if I move the 735 to that, it will only take me minutes.

Today Hike and Hike2 are basically the same, except in Hike2 I've added some things for the Baro Altimeter and HW Compass on the va-hr (there wasn't enough available memory on other devices to include that specific code in Hike)
  • fr 735xt is supported by Hike2

Today I uploaded an update of Hike (0.14i.1) and they only change is that I removed the auto-migration of Hike to the fr735xt. I also updated Hike2 to support the fr735xt (it's now version 2.00.1).

The reason for this is the extra memory availe for things like Hike on the fr735xt,
  • Jim,

I have a FR230 running FW4.30 with a gramin HRM3 strap. Yesterday I was doing a walk using 0.14i (before I realized 0.14i.1 was out), when I was nearing the end of the walk, I got the noticed I was close to start then my watched vibrated longer than I expected it to. When I looked at my screen, I saw move at the time like the activity tracker had timed out. The rest of the screen was blank then it came up in the default running application. Based on the behavior described in post #210, I suspect the watch crashed. I was able to save the activity as a run, but all the steps the watch logged since my last sync were "lost".

I connected my watch to the PC to copy the error log files, and then noticed that there was 0.14i.1 available and tried to update it. I had some issues with Garmin Express freezing mid sync, so I ended up removing and reinstalling hike to make sure the app properly updated.

My question is what other info can I provide to help troubleshoot if the crash was caused by hike or if there is something else going on in FW4.30?

I am leaning towards restting the watch to factory defaults to see if that fixes the anomalies I am seeing with FW4.30
