App: Hiking

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/39d3b5e8-67db-4517-93a8-5ec485269635

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

Changes in version 0.12: see https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?335082-App-Hiking&p=765691#post765691
  • Hike handles lat/lon is 3 different formats, as well as MGRS. I have no plans to add any country specific mappings. I'll just stick with the common ones that the firmware provides. Memory is already tight within Hike..

As far as jumping out to a widget, Connect IQ does not allow for that.
  • Question about using this with a 630 - how do you set the type to "Walking"? The swipe action dosn't do anything on the intro screen for this app (although it says Up, Down, or Swipe to change Walk/Hike).
  • On the 630, you should be able to swipe right of left to toggle hiking and walking, but ONLY before you press start to begin recording. (when recording starts, it's too late)

On the top line you'll see Hike <version number> and then in parens, "Hike" or "Walk". This could be followed by an H, T, or both, indicating it will use a HRM or Tempe is available.
  • I tried that. I am on the screen that says;

    "Press Start!"
    "Up, "Down" or Swipe
    to change Walk/Hike

(I haven't pressed the start button yet.)

But swiping the screen does nothing. I tried swiping up and down and sideways, but no change.
  • What version of FW are you running on the 630? And which version of Hike? (its in the top line of the display)

If you do press "start", can you then swipe between the different screens?
  • Thank you for that suggestion. I think the older firmware caused the problem, possibly the touchscreen version.

I just got this model Friday, and I don't know why I didn't check to see if it had the latest version of the software.

I just updated and I am running v4.10 of the FW with the new touchscreen v 9.65. I have v 0.14c of the app.

Everything now works like it should, and I am able to swipe between Hike and Walk.

    Thank you very much!

Again today i get the wrong step count for activity.

I vabe total of 30000 steps for the day plus a few.

my hike was showing as 26500 on screen i know i did another 3500 ish just walking around doing other stuff..so total of 30000.

yet in activity on 21500 shows up. everything else is correct.
I pause when i rest for a few minutes and unpause when i walk again. i dont walk around during the pause periods.

now sometimes when i have to climb a rock or something my hand bend and the pause button gets hit and then i have to unpause.

Now we could say i accidently hit pause and not noticed and just kept walking. Now that would be a good theory...but then i would have had to tap the resume screen to make it resume at some stage...and at no stage have a i seen a resume screen when i didnt want it to be there.

Does this app automatically resume recording if i pause it then start walking again?

this is simply the best app out there for the vivoactive..but i would just like to solve this one problem

    thanks
  • Hike doesn't "auto resume", so if it's paused, it will stay paused. The version in the store (0.14c) still counts steps when paused - that's the only think I can think of.

Other than that, I just use the data I get from the FW, so I'm really not sure what's happening for you. :(
  • Version 0.14f is now in the app store

Many of the changes here are some internal things that are for things like reducing the battery usage, but there are a few things you'll see:

    • When "paused", the "activity step count" won't increase during that time
    • App settings. I removed a couple of things that really don't apply any more. For example, now it always uses "spots" to draw the chart, so the options for just showing waypoints are gone. Also, I added some settings so you can turn off the screens you don't want to see. The only screen you can't turn off is the first one - the one with time/distance/battery/etc. If you see anything weird, it could be due to the change in settings, and the best solution would be to uninstall and reinstall Hike. With GCM, you'll see it as version 0.14f, but make sure it is also 0.14f on your watch (the top line), as the version on your watch may not have been updated yet!

Internally, I've adapted Hike to the new Vivoactive HR, but didn't publish that device to the store. With it being a new device that people don't have yet, please contact me (PM) if you'd be interested in beta testing it (Current users of Hike preferred because you know how it works already!) And if you beta, please make sure that you update the FW when you get the Vivoactive HR, as there are often updates between when it leaves the factory and gets to you!

When looking in history on the vivoactive can you get it record the steps used in the activity?
I want to able to compare the numbers in history, compared to the number displayed just before i hit save on the watch face and then compare them to the the activity in GC.
i could understand a small discrepancy...perhaps my arm moves a bit when having a drink whilst resting....but not 5000 steps. thats a massive number. and yes, i am looking at the number next to Steps and not next to daily.
Next hike i do will prbably be next week...i'll photo the screen and then ost the activity link to show you what i mean.

Also, an idea i dont know if it possible to do.

Is there anyway to save an activity and then make it resume another day.
for example i might do a mutli day hike..i walk 20 km, then camp and then resume the next day. Any way of making the app suspend counting, then continue the next day other than leaving it on pause over night??

This app also does very well with battery. from everthing i read gps is supoed to be 8 hpurs only on vivoactive. But when i use this app im doing 10% an hour. that would be 10 hours of life
