App: Hiking

https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/39d3b5e8-67db-4517-93a8-5ec485269635

For the vivoactive, FR230, FR235, and FR630 (I don't plan support for other devices)

Please use this thread for questions, etc!

"Hike" records an activity as a hike or walk in Garmin Connect. It also allows you to mark "waypoints" (they show up as lap marks in Garmin connect, so you can see them on that map).

When hike starts, it waits for GPS, and looks for an available HRM and Tempe. At this point, with the up/down key or a screen swipe, you can switch between "hike" and "walk". Then, press "start" to start recording.

The current time, HR and temp (if the sensors are available) is displayed on all screens. While recording, pressing "back" marks a waypoint. To pause or end, press "start again", and you are given the options of "resume", "save", and "discard".

When you hit the start button and get the resume/save/discard menu, you can hit the back button. The menu goes away, and the recording remains paused (it's indicated next to the clock time on all pages). But you can scroll trough the data pages at the time. That way, if you're taking a break, you can sit and look at the current data.

When "paused" is displayed with the time, pressing start again resumes the recording.

There are 5 data screens that you can see when recording (up/down button, or swipe right/left on touch devices) (some not shown here due to forum limits)

The first screen is basic recording info: The time for the activity, the time that recording was active (when paused, this doesn't increase), the distance, and the number of waypoints marked

The second screen shows pace, avg pace, speed, and avg speed.

The third page shows the waypoints you marked. They are shown 5 at a time, and rotate every 7 seconds. They closest waypoint is shown in green.

The fourth page shows elevation data. This is GPS based, and sometime may be off. Elevation, total Ascent, and total Descent is shown.

The fifth page is location information. Your current lat/lon and heading, as well as your starting location lat/lon and the direction and distance back to start. GPS quality is also show, both in text and colors (green is usable or better)

Changes in version 0.12: see https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?335082-App-Hiking&p=765691#post765691
  • The "splits" with Hike as determined by marking waypoints. When you look at them on the map in GC for example, "show laps" shows where you marked waypoints. I don't have plans to include an auto-lap feature to mark one every mile, or km, as I think it would be confusing between waypoints and autolaps when both look the same on the map, etc. If there is a SDK in the future that allows different way to mark stuff, I'll look into it.

    ?

I like your app, it has every feature i want..so thankyou

    But im having an issue

    am on vivoactive software 3.40

today i did a hike 6.42 km and it counted 10507 steps. i took note of these steps and when i synced up and looked at the activity...the activity shows 8800 steps!
similar thing happened the other day today the activity record lost 1700 steps, but those 1700 were still on my daily record.

so question is why did the activity record decide to lose 1700 steps??

at the end of the day im mainly concernered with calories burned, distance and the gps map..but still. i do like step counts
  • What you see in GC for steps is correct for the activity. In hike, I don't have access to the "activity steps", just the 24/7 step count.

What I do is save off the 24/7 count when hike starts, and following that, what I display as "steps" is the current 24/7 step count minus that initial value (with a bit of extra logic in case you walk over midnight and the 24/7 counter resets).

One impact of this is method is if you "pause" hike and walk around while paused, those steps will be included in what hike displays in it's steps, yet the "activity steps" won't include those while paused. So in other words, I show the "steps since starting", and GC for the activity shows "steps while recording".

I can look at ignoring the "steps while paused", but no one has mentioned it before! :) I may just stay with showing "steps since starting" however.

    except i didnt pause.

Why would anyone put it on pause, walk 1700 steps and then unpause? that just defies logic.
The only time i paused was when i stopped for a drink, then i u npaused and continued. but oh well, i'll just put it down to " one of those things that happened and best not to think too hard " moments.

Aside from t hat one thing that happened, its a great app and does everything that can be needed. The oause function is great. Whne i go for walks i sometimes stop for a break and its a godo thing to be able to stop it and continue..the garmin walk function was stupid..your app fixes all that and i dont even need to open any other app now for any walking or hiking. its was more accurate than any of the mapmyfitness when i was mapping my walks or hikes.

only screw up i had wa when i did a 6km walk the other day, pressed the button and went to swip to save and i must of pressed to hard on discard and it deleted the record which was pain...but i remembered the stats anyway which was ok.

    so thanks
  • Do you thought about CiQ field only with simple map? It would be so coooool to add simple map to every app in FR230 :)
  • Mike - I'm testing a DF version of the chart for the 23x/630 (1 field layout, and maybe 2 field layout), and still deciding if I'll put it in the store. While the code actually isn't that complex, saving the info to draw it takes a fair amount of memory (DF's are limited to 16 on those devices). It will also consume the battery with all the drawing involved.
  • I think you should. Just write info about restrictions. Its always good to have posibility of field (1 field size would be enough) in FR230 that is by garmin restricted for FR920/F3/Epix :)
If there would be problems you can always take it down from shop?
  • Mike, I'm still testing and no promises, but I have the chart as a DF for the 23x/630. It will need a 1 or 2 field layout. Here's what it looks like in a 1 field layout:

With these devices and a 1 field layout, I was able to include the time and distance. It will chart for 4+ hours, and after that just show your location from the last point saved. (the chart in Hike handles 10+ hours). The 2 field won't have the time and distance, and I may do a second DF with some things (maybe time, distance, pace or speed, elevation) to make good use of the 2nd DF on that screen.

    Is this what you're thinking?
  • I think its fabulous! :) 4h is maybe not long for hike but for it i got your app and for running and biking its more then enough! I understand it will use km/miles depend on system settings.
  • UK OS grid coordinates

Hi, I think this app is great, and I use it a lot on walks on the fells. Two queries - is it possible to show UK Ordnance Survey grid references, rather than lat and longitude? This would be much more useful for British walkers. As an alternative - is there any way to come out of the app temporarily to use a UK OS widget which I've already downloaded? Thanks, Gez P
