Data field: Visual Pace Alarm

The Visual Pace Alarm data field is a visual aid to help you keep your pace. Visual Pace Alarm shows your current pace and uses a gauge or a background color, depending on the size of the field in which it's placed, to show you how close you are to the pace you've set.

You can find the data field here.

*********** Features ***********
  • You can set it to show your current pace or the average pace over a set number of seconds;
  • Pace gauge, if displayed on full screen (fr920xt / epix) or at least upper half screen (all (semi-)round devices);
  • Pace zone as a background color for all other sizes;
  • Allows you to set target pace and allowed offset to that pace. Offset in both directions is split into 5 zones, that are color coded Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange and Red.
  • Pace gauge view flashes background on leaving target pace zone.

*********** Requirements ***********
Connect IQ version 1.2 or above

*********** Version history ***********
v1.0: Initial version

*********** App Settings ***********
General information about app settings can be found here.

The settings:
  • Target Pace: the pace you want to keep
  • Number of seconds to outer limit: the data field splits the pace between target pace +/- outer limit in 5 zones that are displayed in different colors
  • Number of seconds pace average (optional): you can get direct response if set to a low value or maintain an average over a larger period.

  • Hi TeunMo,

    thanks ! really appreciate your consideration ! Maybe my requests are driven by the fact that I normally need to wear glasses --- but not while running ;) so any optimization which allows for larger number display is extremely helpful

    "@1: I'll consider making this a setting, so the user can choose between the symbol and a bigger font. Personally I prefer the symbol, because it's color emphasizes the zone;"
    -> This would really help a lot :)

    "@2: If you use the data field on a partial screen, you can set a lap distance in another field on the same data screen. I won't add this to this data field."
    -> When I do use the partial screen on the Garmin 235 the half size graphic is no longer readable for myself .... therefore the request to add the lap distance as another data filed into the large circular speed gauge display.
    -> ... but understand that for most user the 2 data sets on a split screen will work ... but it can be so much nicer to add current speed AND lap distance into the single data filed view. I think this is a very popular usage pattern of data screen 2 on running watches to have pace and progress on the current km / mile combined.

    Again thanks for considering ! and I really do like your Speed Data field. THANKS for all your great work !!

    Somewhat confused

    I am using the Visual Speed Alarm on the Garmin Vivoactive. I use it for walking so have set the Target speed to 4.1 miles. Ideally anything below that should appear as a colour other than green i.e. orange, yellow or red but at the moment if I go below 4.1 miles green will still be the colour.

    Can you explain to me what the "Speed difference to outer limit" setting means and how I can get the colour correct.

    Thanks in advance

    The speed between target - outer limit and target + outer limit is devided into 5 zones, each with their corresponding color. This means that the green zone reaches from t - (o / 5) to t + (o / 5) (where t is target speed and o is outer limit).
    For instance if you set your target to 4.1 and the outer limit to 1 anything between 3.9 and 4.3 Mph will be in the green zone. Or, to turn it around, if you want your green zone to be from 4.1 to 4.5 Mph, you need to set the target to 4.3 and the outer limit to 1.

    Cadence instead.

    I'd like to see a similar data field (app?) except using cadence data instead. I use my vivoactive to monitor my paddling (standup) cadence and it does a pretty good job, but to have a color coded display would be awesome. A paddle stroke is very similar to the arm swing when running or walking so the data is usually very good. one paddle stoke = arm up swing + arm down swing, just like right foot + left foot. An ideal monitoring range would be chosing your cadence target, let's say 55 strokes per minute in the green center position; then 5 spm up or down in each color sector. This would work great for all water paddle sports as well as cross country skiing.
  • what value for 'number of seconds pace average' works best?

    2 questions:

    - What value ia generally used for 'number of seconds pace average'?
    - And what value displays the standard 'instant pace' from the F3 watch?

    best regards,
    Huub
  • I've been looking for this very thing.

    However, I use "workouts" as a training tool and don't set out at a set speed over the whole run. It varies a lot during the training.

    Will this app capture my pace ranges for the individual steps and display it accordingly? I'm not seeing that it will. If not, it would be a great feature to add.

    Thanks!
  • Nice work! Reques for power

    I like this interface, and would love to see it report on power on my Edge 1000. The biggest use of my device during a race is my power metrics. Would like a half screen showing the graphical output so a quick glance tells me where I am at.

    Thank you, and great work.

  • Nice app, maybe the following is also possible? Would be very nice for training.

    I would like an app like the Visual HR zones, but then with pace zones. For instance:
    - Zone 1: Active recovery - >6:26

    - Zone 2: Endurance - 6:26 - 5:32

    - Zone 3: Tempo - 5:32 - 4:58

    - Zone 4: Threshold - 4:58 - 4:39

    - Zone 5: VO2max - 4:39 - 4:23

    - Zone 6: Anaerobic - < 4:32

    Hope this app can be made by you?

    Best regards

    Definitely the ultimate zone parameterization :)

    I do agree, this setting is what I am looking for too.
