Nightscout widget issue with fenix 3 firmware v5.0

This is a thread so that anyone can feedback about the Nightscout Widget.

As of fenix 3 v5.0 firmware update the app requires you to re-enter you Nightscout site name everytime you launch the widget. The name never gets saved. This is an extremely useful widget. Please let me know if there is additional feedback I can provide to help you fix this. Thx!

I will try to fix it.

    Hi there,

I'm really sorry that it has stopped working, and thanks for the information and the positive feedback. I think that the reason for the issue is that the new version of the software includes proper settings functionality, and what I had done before was a work-around. I've had another problem with the new development kit which meant that I could not develop the app at all, hence no progress yesterday, but I have an answer to that now. I'll let you know when I make progress.

Do you get any data at all? For the last day it probably read 5.9 mmol/L if you are getting the initial install reading. If you personal message me, I can try and add you to the Pick a Site menu, which I wrote because I have a vivoactive and the text picker doesn't work on them. We can then see if the setting sticks that way on your watch. But you have to be happy for anyone to be able to see your BGs, (although hopefully not your sitename, but I can't guarantee it.)

In answer to the other question about the watch face, I am not sure that it is possible on a watch face, because only apps and widgets support using the phone connection. I haven't seen a way to feed that data into a watchface. I was thinking that it must be possible to have widget that runs in the background and auto-refreshes, so that you get BG alerts, but I hadn't got that far yet.

    Regards,

    R.

    New version released

I have now released a new version, 0.0.7. It fixes a couple of issues with hiding sitenames, but I don't know if it fixes the Fenix issue. The other change I made may be that you can set the sitename in your mobile now as well, but I have not got the right version of the firmware on my watch to test it.

If it is still broken, please let me know.

    Regards,

    R.

Thank you! It appears to be working perfectly now. I really appreciate your efforts with this. If they ever make it possible to get the Nightscout data on a watch face that would be great as well. Thx again!
  • Is this really a "CIQ Showcase" thread?

    I can't see where you're asking for help! :)

You might be right, thanks for the reply. Is there any way of changing the thread, or do I just need to start a new one?

    Nightscout Data Field?

Thank you so much Phimby for developing the Nightscout widget for Garmin watches! I'm so happy that I can see my blood sugar on my wrist without having to fumble with my phone. This is incredibly helpful at night because I am so nearsighted that I can't read the blood sugar on my phone when I set it up like an alarm clock on the night stand.

Is it possible to provide a Nightscout data field too? The widget is great for being out and about. The trouble is that I don't know my blood sugar during an activity. I have to end the activity to check the Nightscout widget, then start a new activity.

I just want the current blood sugar number. No frills.

Thank you again. In the spirit of Nightscout, your work has truly made a difference for me.

Thanks and possibly not, but I will look into it

Hi DaDisplacedYooper, thanks for your kind thoughts about my widget, it is nice to know it is useful.

I will have a look into how to solve this problem, but unfortunately it is not as easy as I'd like. The difficulty is that the data field type application cannot use Communications which is what I need to use to communicate with the nightscout website and I don't think that it is possible to pass data from a widget to a data field.

I have asked for some help on the forum for ideas on how to solve the problem. Even if no-one comes up with an answer, hopefully Garmin will think about extending their development platform in the future, but don't hold your breath as their argument is a drain on battery life.

If I make some progress I'll post a further update.
