Application: dwMap - Route Maps for Vivoactive and other watches

I have just published a route map app, dwApp, which I hope will fill a hole in the Connect IQ ecosystem.
Download from App Store

The primary goal was to offer a route map display and follow capability on the Vivoactive. The app however works on all Connect IQ devices and should be an very convenient way to send a route to the watch after creating it in MapMyRun, Ride with GPS, etc. It also offers an activity recording capability while you are using the routing feature.

I look forward to your requests, feedback, questions and bug reports, in this thread!

Features
- Uses a link code mechanism to link your watch to your account on http://dynamic.watch
- Your dynamic.watch account can be linked to Ride with GPS and Under Armour (MapMyRun/MapMyRide) to import routes automatically from those accounts, or you can import GPX and Garmin Connect routes
- Indicate which route is your current route, and you watch will automatically download it next time you start the app
- App displays a map view or a dashboard (data fields) view
- Map view has three zoom levels, and shows you current position and direction
- Dashboard view shows speed, distance, HR and other common activity stats
- App uses the normal built-in recording capability of the watch, and when you stop and save the activity it is sync'ed with Garmin Connect in the usual way
- App works without a data/phone connection, using the most recently downloaded route when offline
  • 1) discard - ok
    2) zoom - ack
    3) pace / speed - I also wonder if you will add in autolap? Reason is many people running want to see their laps

OK autolap added to the request list, thanks for the suggestion.
  • Route creator added to the dynamicWatch web site

New "Create Route" tool added to create routes (using Google Maps and its cycling/walking directions services) directly on the http://dynamic.watch website.

This should be useful for dwMap route map watch app users who are not already using Ride with GPS or one of the other route services that we link to.

Just choose "Route Create" on the main home page showing your routes list. You also can edit these routes later using the "edit" link next to them in the routes list.

As always, please let me know if you have any suggestions or requests.
  • I cant saved "Buenos Aires" locations. I can save for example New York locations.

Looks like in Buenos Aires you can get directions if you switch to Walk mode, but not in Cycling mode. Is that what you are seeing?
  • The app worked great for me. Thanks!!

    I have some suggestions:
    - it would be easier for new user if first uploaded route is automatically marked for download
    - on my race bike I am most interested in speed, hr and cad. I really want this on one screen. I would suggest to include speed on every field page. Or make a layout similar to 367 bike fields and display more data fields on one screen (9 instead of 4).
    - the triangle could be a bit bigger and different color (black, green), it is sometimes difficult to see which direction it is pointing
    - "deviated from the route" vibration alert would be great

    Regards!

MarekHuk: just noticed your post, sorry about the delayed reply. Excellent suggestions, will add to the list.

This is now fixed--the route creator will request regular driving directions (with "avoiding highways" option used) if cycling-specific directions are not available.
  • I'd like to be able to locate a place in Google maps and download the route to the watch.

We now have a Google Maps-based route creator built into the website, so you can route between places on the Google map and send the route to the watch: http://dynamic.watch/plan
  • New release with improvements for runners

Just released a new V1.0004 which shows pace instead of speed on the watch when Running is chosen as the current sport. Download running routes are now also more detailed.

  • Any chance of getting the route on the F3 without phone connection?

I use a Windows Phone = no Garmin Connect for that, no phone connection possible

Sorry, no, the app relies on a Connect IQ function to fetch remote data that is implemented by Garmin Mobile Connect running on the iPhone/Android phone, and I am not aware of another way to do it.

    Excited!

Thank you so much for creating this app. Got it up and running and can't wait to use it tomorrow. This by far is the best app I have seen so far for the VA. Two things in my mind that would make it perfect for me would be the ability to change the fields on the dashboard and being able to have the option to look at the map based on the direction I am going. Thanks again and can't wait to see updates!
