Application: dwMap - Route Maps for Vivoactive and other watches

I have just published a route map app, dwApp, which I hope will fill a hole in the Connect IQ ecosystem.
Download from App Store

The primary goal was to offer a route map display and follow capability on the Vivoactive. The app however works on all Connect IQ devices and should be an very convenient way to send a route to the watch after creating it in MapMyRun, Ride with GPS, etc. It also offers an activity recording capability while you are using the routing feature.

I look forward to your requests, feedback, questions and bug reports, in this thread!

Features
- Uses a link code mechanism to link your watch to your account on http://dynamic.watch
- Your dynamic.watch account can be linked to Ride with GPS and Under Armour (MapMyRun/MapMyRide) to import routes automatically from those accounts, or you can import GPX and Garmin Connect routes
- Indicate which route is your current route, and you watch will automatically download it next time you start the app
- App displays a map view or a dashboard (data fields) view
- Map view has three zoom levels, and shows you current position and direction
- Dashboard view shows speed, distance, HR and other common activity stats
- App uses the normal built-in recording capability of the watch, and when you stop and save the activity it is sync'ed with Garmin Connect in the usual way
- App works without a data/phone connection, using the most recently downloaded route when offline
  • I've had another couple of crashes. Both have occurred around 3-4 miles into a run (my two previous runs).
The result is a restart of my watch with mapping stopped leaving me reaching for Google Maps on my phone.
Firmware on my FR630 is current (7.10) though this is the first time I've used dwMap with the latest firmware.
Any other reports of similar crashes?

Yes, there has been an uptick in the number of reports like this recently, on several watch models. The app itself has not changed now since October, so the firmware change on the watches seems a likely candidate for the reason, although it might be related to the amount of memory being available to the app changing slightly rather than a bug in the firmware possibly.

One thing to try is switching from track-up to north-up or vice versa, as the app makes different speed/memory trade offs for those two options.
  • Zooming

Is it at all possible that the app can use the fixed zoom scales, independent from the original map size?
The navigation feature of fenix 3 uses fixed zoom scales such as "120m", "0.3km", and so on. But dwMap app uses "x4", "x2"...
I prefer the fenix (or other garmin watches) way, otherwise zooming does not do what it should do when the map covers very wide area.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I've added it to our request list. Right now it is not really feasible, as we're running very short on memory for adding features, but I agree that some users might have more specific scale preferences.
  • Activity Type

Is it somehow possible to define the activity type for the route so that gets saved correctly on Garmin Connect? I couldn't find an option for that but only the data field displaying th type.

It's hiding in plain sight on your main home page https://dynamic.watch/me right above the route list. dwMap picks up the change on its next sync.
  • view starred strava segments on vivoactive hr?

Is there a way using the app to view a strava segment as you ride near it. e.g. 10m from start...alert. The edge series kind of does some thing similar where it tells you where your starred segments are.

    Thanks,

    Stuart

The watch platform has limited memory (especially on some watches, though your Vivoactive HR has more than most) so the dwMap app only downloads one route at once. What you can do with our Premium option is create a single route but that has multiple legs to it, with gaps in between each. That would be the best way to get what you are after I think.
  • Installed routeCourse on my Edge 1000 and synched it with my Android phone. Even managed to copy a Strava route to it successfully. The issue I have is every time I launch the IQ app it asks me again to enter the authentication code despite my Garmin already being registered.

Drop me an email at info@dynamic,watch for our suggested workaround. This started happening with a recent firmware upgrade on the Edge 1000 and although we cannot see any reason for it, we can work around it.

    Wonderful app!

However, I'm wondering whether there is an option use Garmin's training plan functionality (= I get beeps & vibrations for intervals and other workouts) while simultaneously having dwMap to run an unknown route?
    (I'm using a FR 235 btw)

(If not, I will in the future run an unknown route with dwMap a few times and memorize it, and then the next time, run it with the training function.
Or try to memorize the workout details: that would be better!)

Update: I simply write the workout instructions on a paper and put it in a tiny plastic bag. Now I can use dwMap at all times!
Plus buying Premium since I would like turn-by-turn :D
