Application: dwMap - Route Maps for Vivoactive and other watches

I have just published a route map app, dwApp, which I hope will fill a hole in the Connect IQ ecosystem.
Download from App Store

The primary goal was to offer a route map display and follow capability on the Vivoactive. The app however works on all Connect IQ devices and should be an very convenient way to send a route to the watch after creating it in MapMyRun, Ride with GPS, etc. It also offers an activity recording capability while you are using the routing feature.

I look forward to your requests, feedback, questions and bug reports, in this thread!

Features
- Uses a link code mechanism to link your watch to your account on http://dynamic.watch
- Your dynamic.watch account can be linked to Ride with GPS and Under Armour (MapMyRun/MapMyRide) to import routes automatically from those accounts, or you can import GPX and Garmin Connect routes
- Indicate which route is your current route, and you watch will automatically download it next time you start the app
- App displays a map view or a dashboard (data fields) view
- Map view has three zoom levels, and shows you current position and direction
- Dashboard view shows speed, distance, HR and other common activity stats
- App uses the normal built-in recording capability of the watch, and when you stop and save the activity it is sync'ed with Garmin Connect in the usual way
- App works without a data/phone connection, using the most recently downloaded route when offline
  • Is there any videos / images of DW Premium.

I'm interested in seeing how waypoints are added (and named) and also how it looks on a Fenix 3.

Can you select to skip a way point etc....

I'm quite interested in this rather than using Ride with GPS (or other similar sites), edit way points, export, convert to fit file, copy onto watch etc...

We do not have an Premium specific videos available yet. (There are some user created videos of the free version, in various languages, at https://dynamic.watch/help/otherlanguages ).

I'd recommend playing around with the free version initially to compare how easy the route creation and download process compared to the Ride with GPS...etc rigamarole. That does not include waypoint features but you can get a good feel for it.

Re "skip" a waypoint, the waypoints are not arranged sequentially. You just choose the one you want to be guided to, and then you would select the next one, and so on.

Happy to assist at [email protected] if you have further questions.

  • Cycle Navigation...

    Hi,

I installed the free version as a trial and was planning to use it for cycling, installing a GPX route to follow. Am I right in saying that when using this app you can't access the usual stats such as heart rate, average speed, current speed etc? Or is that a premium feature?

    thanks
    Nick

Hi Nick, the free version includes three pages of date fields, including all the ones that you list. The Premium version lets you choose which fields you have on each page, but the free includes 12 popular ones. These are accessed by a screen tap, or by cycling through the page up/down buttons, depending on your watch model.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

I see, a tap seems to do it (Vivoactive HR). I was trying to swipe up/down as that's how the normal cycling app operates.

The only other thing I struggled with was that it after a ride it doesn't let me "discard" the activity, forcing me to save each one... which then gets auto uploaded to strava (with 0 miles as I'm testing). I'm guessing there is a discard option but I'm missing it somehow?

    Thanks for the quick response.

I see, one tap works for me (Vivoactive HR). I was trying to swipe up/down as that is how it works in the normal cycling app.

The only other problem I have is that I can't figure out how to discard an activity. It forces me to save each one and then they get auto uploaded to strava. I've had to delete a load of "test" activities I've just been recording. Am I not seeing the option for "discard" somewhere?

This was a choice we made to err on the side of not accidentally deleting a normal activity. We need to keep the menus and features carefully controlled because a complex app like dwMap is really limited by the small amount of memory available on the watches, and hence did not want to add an extra prompt step, thus the unwanted activity has to be deleted in History or in Garmin Connect. We've had a number of requests along the lines of yours from users trying it for the first time, when, as you say, you generate test activities, but generally feedback suggests it's not a significant issue in long term normal use.

    Thanks for the feedback!

    restart during activity

    Hi,

When I run with my forerunner 630, I launch dwmap to have the course on my watch. But after approximately ten kilometers, the watch restart automatically and it stop the course while my training is not over.

    Could you help me ?

    Thanks
  • Chrome toolbar button to save routes directly to dwMap

If you use Chrome as the web browser on your computer we have a new Chrome Extension (https://is.gd/dwchrome) that adds a button to your toolbar to save routes directly from Garmin Connect, Strava, Ride with GPS and MapMyRun! It's now incredibly easy to browse the wealth of awesome routes on those sites, then send them to your Garmin watch.

The routes are added to your account at dynamic.watch, and are automatically available in the dwMap app on your watch. You can also set the saved route as your current route right from the button's popup window.

  • Hi,

I've had another couple of crashes. Both have occurred around 3-4 miles into a run (my two previous runs).
The result is a restart of my watch with mapping stopped leaving me reaching for Google Maps on my phone.
Firmware on my FR630 is current (7.10) though this is the first time I've used dwMap with the latest firmware.
Any other reports of similar crashes?
