Application: dwMap - Route Maps for Vivoactive and other watches

I have just published a route map app, dwApp, which I hope will fill a hole in the Connect IQ ecosystem.
Download from App Store

The primary goal was to offer a route map display and follow capability on the Vivoactive. The app however works on all Connect IQ devices and should be an very convenient way to send a route to the watch after creating it in MapMyRun, Ride with GPS, etc. It also offers an activity recording capability while you are using the routing feature.

I look forward to your requests, feedback, questions and bug reports, in this thread!

Features
- Uses a link code mechanism to link your watch to your account on http://dynamic.watch
- Your dynamic.watch account can be linked to Ride with GPS and Under Armour (MapMyRun/MapMyRide) to import routes automatically from those accounts, or you can import GPX and Garmin Connect routes
- Indicate which route is your current route, and you watch will automatically download it next time you start the app
- App displays a map view or a dashboard (data fields) view
- Map view has three zoom levels, and shows you current position and direction
- Dashboard view shows speed, distance, HR and other common activity stats
- App uses the normal built-in recording capability of the watch, and when you stop and save the activity it is sync'ed with Garmin Connect in the usual way
- App works without a data/phone connection, using the most recently downloaded route when offline
  • Our site actually only uses the number part, so try just entering 10945880 and it should work?

Thanks for your interest in the app!

"Route not found", for that eight-digit number of my saved route from the Garmin site. I've created several running routes directly, thank you, but some of my favorite runs in the world are in fairly remote places. I have those saved on Garmin, would like to get them on my watch. Still, being able to create routes with your app is so cool!

I'm happy with a Garmin watch for the first time since my 305 died, thanks.

Do you have the route set to "public" at Garmin Connect? That is necessary for us to be able to access it.

Good to hear you are finding our route planner to be useful. It was initially added as a convenience for users who weren't already using a route planning service, but it's starting to be popular in its own right.

I also loved the 305 I had, back in the day!

Looking at the route on Connect, there is a picture of an open lock. Hovering over it I get a popup message saying "This course is public, click to make private". So I'm pretty sure this course is public.

On Garmin Connect I can make a course, and they give a choice of using Google Map or Open Street Map. Open Street has a lot more and better detail on trails I like, any chance of giving that option on your Dynamic Watch site for building courses?

Whatever you did at Connect seems to have changed it, as I can now see 10945880, and you probably can import it now? Perhaps it needed to be cycled through private and back to public for some reason.

As for OSM, our planner tool is using Google's routing engine behind the scenes, so even though we could show an OSM map layer, the routing would still use Google's trails, and that might be a bit confusing. There are various OSM-related routing projects that are becoming more mature, so at some point we may have viable OSM routing options.
  • Fantastic, it works, can't wait to try it out tonight. Thanks!
  • Great addon

Wish Garmin could get this into the VivoActive, but glad something out there to use! this is fantastic even if basic. Now I know if I am running or biking in the right direction on mtn trails. Prior I would have to guess where I was going or bring my mobile phone.

Great tool maybe Garmin will develop more on the device this capability as well. ????
  • It is great. I finally tried it out last night, had to stick to the roads and use my light, but it seems to have recorded the run well. I wasn't exactly on course, but close enough to know, in an unfamiliar place, if I was in the right area. My ancient Garmin 305 would give a course arrow to keep me within feet of course, and in the right direction, and audible notice of turns, very sophisticated.

I travel a lot for work, love to explore, and I've gotten plenty lost in places like endless, identical, Moscow apartment blocks, or the English Moors west of Heathrow. I tend to stick to rivers and familiar routes to keep from getting lost, this app will free me up to explore a little more on my runs.

Glad you're finding it useful Pinkytwister! Please give us a good review at https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/2750f280-82f4-4f21-a32c-57acc7ce4870 and we also just posted an update there today.

  • Update V1.1.0007 released with Track-up mode

We just released an update V1.1.0007 at https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/2750f280-82f4-4f21-a32c-57acc7ce4870

This release adds a much-requested "track-up" mode for viewing the route on your watch. and we've also updated the line styles and colors.

In track-up mode the app rotates the map on the watch screen so that your forward direction is "up". The existing "north-up" mode continues to be available (and is the default). To enable track-up, go to your page at http://dynamic.watch/me and you'll see new watch settings options. Start dwMap on your watch (or press Menu -> Refresh Route if you want to change mode during an activity) and the mode will match your choice on the website. You can tell it is in track-up mode if there is a rotating N marker at the left or top-left of the watch screen, which will point north.
