Application: dwMap - Route Maps for Vivoactive and other watches

I have just published a route map app, dwApp, which I hope will fill a hole in the Connect IQ ecosystem.
Download from App Store

The primary goal was to offer a route map display and follow capability on the Vivoactive. The app however works on all Connect IQ devices and should be an very convenient way to send a route to the watch after creating it in MapMyRun, Ride with GPS, etc. It also offers an activity recording capability while you are using the routing feature.

I look forward to your requests, feedback, questions and bug reports, in this thread!

Features
- Uses a link code mechanism to link your watch to your account on http://dynamic.watch
- Your dynamic.watch account can be linked to Ride with GPS and Under Armour (MapMyRun/MapMyRide) to import routes automatically from those accounts, or you can import GPX and Garmin Connect routes
- Indicate which route is your current route, and you watch will automatically download it next time you start the app
- App displays a map view or a dashboard (data fields) view
- Map view has three zoom levels, and shows you current position and direction
- Dashboard view shows speed, distance, HR and other common activity stats
- App uses the normal built-in recording capability of the watch, and when you stop and save the activity it is sync'ed with Garmin Connect in the usual way
- App works without a data/phone connection, using the most recently downloaded route when offline
  • Thank you so much for creating this app. Got it up and running and can't wait to use it tomorrow. This by far is the best app I have seen so far for the VA. Three things in my mind that would make it perfect for me would be the ability to change the fields on the dashboard or the ability to have multiple dashboards, and being able to have the option to look at the map based on the direction I am going. Thanks again and can't wait to see updates!

OK requests noted, and please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thoughts after using the app

The app worked well today. Did a short ride of ten miles on my bike. Just two quick thoughts:
    • The biggest negative for me (though not a big deal) was that the data on the dashboard was a little too small to see well when I looked down to see my speed and distance. Ideally it would be easier to see if there were only two or three fields on each page of the dashboard or if the fields were organized differently (ex. - 2 fields on top and two on bottom).
    • It would be nice to have an auto pause feature whenever I stop.

But thanks again for the app. I plan to use it during my road rides in the future.

Thanks for the feedback, added to request list. I just had another request this morning for an option to reduce the number of fields and make them larger.

How does this work for hiking? I click on the map but nothing happens. If I click on a road I get it. But, I want to bushwack, there might not even be any trails.

If you are hiking on trails that Google has, try changing the route type from cycling to running (button next to bicycle one) and seeing if you can plot your route. If not, then you should use a more complete route planning service such as MapMyRun and then set up a link to it from our http://dynamic.watch site (in Settings). The route planner on our website is intended for quick/no-frills route creation, and we leave the more sophisticated planning to the services that we can link to.
  • Thanks so much for writing this app

I'd started writing something like this a couple of months ago, but you've nailed it. I'll test out this week, but from a first look really well done, and I share the feedback that I'd prefer larger fonts.

    Thanks!

Thanks Brian, vote for the larger fonts noted.
  • Metric option now available

The dynamic.watch website now allows you to choose Metric units (in Settings).

This only affects the website--the dwMap watch app itself should be already be picking up the statute/metric setting on your watch.

Great thank you. Works for me!
  • Route sharing

The http://dynamic.watch website now lets you share created routes with other CIQ watch users via email, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
