Watchface: CountDown 2 Event

This is a watchface showing a countdown timer towards a specific event in the future.
Together with the countdown, it displays the time, date and battery strength in %.
Support for 12/24 hour with am/pm indicator for 12 hour format.

When the event starts, it removes the timer and displays a message that the event has started.
As soon as the event finishes, it display a proper message telling you that the event is over.

Currently the start and end dates of an event is hard coded for each app.
After an event has finished, the app will be updated in the app store to display the countdown for the next annual event.
Users will then have to update the app from the store.

Currently the following marathons are supported:

Comrades Marathon 2015
Berlin Marathon 2015
Chicago Marathon 2015
Frankfurt Marathon 2015
New York Marathon 2015
Tokyo Marathon 2016
Two Oceans Marathon 2016
London Marathon 2016
Boston Marathon 2016

Here are the links for the apps:

  • The ability for "user config" should start to be available for developers sometime in Sept., per Garmin. After testing, configurable stuff will start showing up for end users.

I am so excited by the prospects of this!
    Come September, come quickly!!
  • As it happens, Hermot already states that provided enough incentive - he would be willing to make that change.

When user configuration becomes available - I view that as opportunity for HERMOT to offer pro level plans.

The incentive is only for making copies for the various marathons. The incentive is required purely because it creates a maintenance nightmare to maintain all these different copies.

As soon as user configurability comes, I will create and maintain just one generic version of the watchface.
For free, for the love of the sport and passion for technology.

Thanks for all the support so far!
  • My optimism with these watch faces went a bit too far.

So today I received notice that I breached the terms and conditions regarding the use of logos of marathons on the cover images and within the watchfaces.
As a result, all my countdown watchfaces have been removed from the Connect IQ store with immediate effect.

If you happen to stop by here and were surprised to see all those watchfaces gone, then at least you know why.

I still have to decide whether or not I will re-submit versions of the countdown watchfaces that meet the terms and conditions.

    Until then....train hard!

    ;)

    ====
    EDIT
    ====
Decision was made to not resubmit.
Legal department stated that the name of the event, i.e. the actual words, are also protected. It is not just a matter of logos.
So to seek permission from each event is just impossible, and therefor I have to bow out of the game, till Garmin give me better weapons in the form of user configurability.

Too bad, it's a shame really. But in a way to be expected esp since they took down the IM watchface which has the IM logo on it.

    Yes, no hard feelings though.

I just feel for the users who are gonna wake up and find out that they all are gone.

I have my sight on user configurability, and I promise to strike hard when that comes out ;)

Thanks for the watchface countdown. I think that if Garmin stopped you from publishing the watchface , then i should be ashame because the connectIQ store has very few apps, not many are useful at all.

Garmin needs to encourage a developer like you to fill the app store. The fenix 3 has a lot of problem in term of pace & GPS accuracy. At least their connect IQ app provides some useful apps to the users.

I would like to have a watchface for Marine corp marathon, Garmin should allow you to sell the app.

I had a negative review that made me re-think my strategy with the countdown timer.

The question whether I will make this timer for every race in the world, is actually very good, because it forced me to think where I will draw the line.
Apart from it consuming a lot of time, which I choose to spend as I like and doesn't hurt others, it takes up a lot of space in the Connect IQ store gallery.

I do understand that people could become irritated and annoyed by seeing the same app, albeit for a different race, over and over on every page. The only two things that differ is the race name on the watch face, and the logo being displayed in the store. I respect others' view and therefor would withdraw if so desired by the community.

It would have been OK if Garmin provided a separate category so that I could group my watch faces into a single group that would have occupied just a single spot in the gallery for watch faces.

There are two things that this very young project of mine points out, and I really hope that Garmin will take note of this and improve:

    1) User configurability for watch faces
There is a demand, both from users and developers to be able to configure a watch face.
In my countdown example, it would have been the perfect solution if there was a way for a user to provide his own event name and date.
Then I could have published just one watchface, and it would have been reusable, time and time again.

    2) Categorizing apps in the gallery is not optimal. Like mentioned before, it would have been better to group all my countdown timers into a single spot in the gallery instead of displaying all of them among all the others.

I think I might have created the very last two countdown timers tonight:
    Ironman Lake Placid (@Adrenochrome66)
    and
    Amsterdam Marathon.

This project started as a fun hobby the moment I got my new 920XT, and was driven by my passion for some of the races for which I created the first countdown timers. But I realise that this is not sustainable and hope that Garmin Connect IQ can take note of the issues outlined here.

You should note that the watchfaces are (some) using copyrighted images.

Correct. Some events have no problem with that, but then you get some that are so up tight :p

Not just the images, apparently the words "xxxx Marathon" was also an issue for the particular organizer.

Anyway, I don't have time for this nonsense.

Garmin is not at fault here. :)
  • Would love to see a Countdown to the following two events:

    Ironman Maryland

    Ironman Eagleman 70.3
  • Any chance you could post one just as "count down timer"?

I really want the count down to Arizona IM one. any way you could tweak it and just have it as count down to Nov 15 2015 7AM? I could care less about the logo.
