Forum reply - An error occurred. Please try again or contact your administrator. - Bug in forum software?

Is there a trick to replying in a forum thread?  I keep getting "An error occurred. Please try again or contact your administrator." for a very simple reply that has zero additional formatting.  I've tried three different browsers thinking maybe that was part of the problem, but I can't figure out how to reply in my own thread.

  • no formattin whatsoever, in my reply

  • It hasn't been resolved. If you are extremely frustrated with Garmin for this, you are not alone. This has been a problem for about a year, and it was a huge problem years ago, with the previous forum platform. I noticed that Garmin seems to encounter the same issues (or kinds of issues) over and over again.

Anyway, posts can be rejected with or without formatting. Formatting does make it more likely that a post will be rejected.

There are several tricks which you can try if the forum is rejecting a post ((besides removing formatting, which doesn't apply to you):

    - break the post into smaller pieces. Shorter posts often allow you to use formatting and/or the "problem content" listed below, even when it wouldn't be allowed in a longer post

    - replace parens ( ) with square brackets [ ]

    - replace numerals like 1, 2, 3,4 with words like one, two, three, four

    - avoid pasting images (sometimes it helps to use a 3rd party image host like postimages.org, imgbb.com, or imgur.com

(I'm guessing that your post didn't includes images either, but just including this for completeness)

    - (rare) enter URLs as plain text, not clickable blue links, before pressing Reply. The forum will usually change plain text urls to clickable links after you press Reply, anyway.

You avoid creating clickable links as follows: paste a URL/link or type a URL, but do *not* press Space or Enter afterwards. To accomplish this, you might have to paste / type URLs after typing the rest of your post.

Another option is to change clickable URLs to plain text before you press reply:

    - move to cursor to a link and press CTRL-K / CMD-K

    - clear out the Url field, but leave Text to display unchanged (it should be the same as the Url).

This obviously means that your link text has to be the same as the URL, like https://www.google.com and not link to google
