Vivoactive 2.80 Firmware Release Notes

Many of you have already noticed the vivoactive 2.80 release. I've pulled together a short list of the changes in this firmware release that affect Connect IQ.

Update: I was informed that a couple of the changes I listed did not make it into this build (in red below). There is also one change I had not listed that was included (in green below).

  • Includes the changes from the Connect IQ 1.1.1 SDK release
  • Increases low power timeout to 10 seconds to allow CIQ apps time to show the seconds hand
  • Adds the Connect IQ version to the About page
  • Increases the widget timeout to 45 seconds when making communications requests

Not yet included:

  • Adds the ability to back out of a progress bar in Connect IQ apps

  • Uses immediate transition to Connect IQ watch faces

  • Fixes bug where a Connect IQ watch face could be shown while an app is running

We're aware of some issues that have cropped up with this release, and are working to address them. Please let us know if you encounter any new issues or have any questions about the release!
    • Includes the changes from the Connect IQ 1.1.1 SDK release

Will the Connect IQ IDE be updated to 1.1.1 within eclipse...? The http://developer.garmin.com/downloads/connect-iq/eclipse link still lists 1.1.0 as the current IQ IDE/SDK Manager version. Or is there no change to the IDE & Manager at all and it was just a coincidence that they were all version 1.1.0 at the same time previously?

I already downloaded the 1.1.1 SDK and overwrote the old one, so if there's nothing else to do then yay.

We have some changes to the Eclipse plug-in but do not have a formal release put together at the moment. Hopefully in the next few weeks we'll be able to put out a 1.1.1 release for the plug-in.
  • FYI, there have been a number of people in the vivoactive forum that are reporting that when the step goal is hit and the fireworks occur, device crashes and people are connecting it to CIQ watchfaces. Garmin support is telling some people to remove their CIQ watchfaces.

  • @jim_m_58 thanks for the heads up. I was trying to reproduce this earlier and couldn't. I'll keep trying a few things and see what else I can find out.
  • I replied to that thread since there were so many people discussing the issue there. I'll reiterate some of what I said there:

The firework animation crash is a 2.80 firmware bug, which should be fixed in our next firmware release. It only occurs when a custom watch face is in use because the firmware isn't cleaning up CIQ properly before initializing the watch face after the animation occurs. Since it's a firmware issue and not a Connect IQ or app bug, it's not something that watch face authors can address. It's happening with several different apps, but I think ActiFace is getting blamed disproportionately simply because so many people use it. :)
  • Thanks for the update Brandon. I hope this will be fixed soon, or people may become disillusioned with CIQ. Maybe they can just release a 2.85 that doesn't have the fireworks nonsense!
  • @Brandon - I made another suggestion to voiding this without deleting CIQ watchfaces. Until the FW comes out to fix this, just set a manual step goal high enough you won't hit it!
  • This fix REALLY needs to be out VERY soon (like this week). Imagine the following:

-New user gets a va, and follows the instructions to set it up (2,80 gets installed as a part of that)
-as a new user/new device, auto step goal is 5000 steps (the default is auto goal)
-the default watchface is lame and you try CIQ and install a new one
-mid day, when you pass 5000 steps, everything crashes and your data is lost.

How would the Garmin folks feel if they bought a device that did this? It's the top threads in the vivoactive forum!

Has the fool that signed off on this fireworks BS in this version been fired yet?

Calling them a fool won't help. Maybe back off a little, allow them to learn, and proceed a wiser person.
  • Adding the "fireworks" and not really testing it was foolish. When you hit your step goal, you see the fireworks, but with many CIQ watchfaces, the VA then crashes and you may lose all the steps since the last time you synced. It's not an issue with CIQ or watchfaces - it's the base FW on the va that messes up the CIQ environment.
