Converting an existing widget to an app

I am considering to convert my PositionPlus widget which is already on the Connect IQ store to an app so that I can add a number of app specific features.

My question is, if I go to the Connect IQ Store >> Position Plus, click on "upload new version" and attach the new .iq file (which is now an app and no longer a widget) will existing users of the widget be able to automatically upgrade PositionPlus v2.1 (current version - a widget) to PositionPlus v3.0 (upcoming version - an app) on their devices? In other words, will this simply appear as an upgrade in Garmin Express for users of the current version?

The app store doesn't currently allow an app of one type to be changed to another type. You could load v3.0 of your app and completely remove earlier versions from the store, or you could add v3.0 and leave the earlier versions for anyone that might prefer to use a widget. Either way, customers will need to deliberately add the new version of your app to their device since Garmin Express won't automatically update the app in this case.
