Connect IQ watch face - Fenix 3 reboots

Hi All,
Not sure where to post this ti get any help or support, so hopefully ok here.

No Matter what Connect IQ watch face I use, my Fenix 3 will eventually freeze and reboot.

Change it back to the default digital or analogue watch face and no issue.

From what I can gather, it may reboot with Connect IQ watch face and a notification from the phone.

But on the week-end it rebooted when resuming an activity. After the reboot tried to resume and again rebooted. Next reboot changed back to a default watch face and was able to resume an activity.

Cheers

Well, I did send it to the Email-address from the thread above:
    [email protected]
What do you mean posting here? My error file?
    here it is:
  • I got response from them, saying the are discussing the issue and possible firmware problem.
Any chance to know when it can be expected?
Unfortunately it affects the non-preinstalled Garmin-made watchfaces and data fields as well; most frustrating is when it restarts during a training session due to the visual HR datafield.

If it takes longer to fix, any chance to do a firmware downgrade?

I just miss the watch that was working flawlessly so far..

    Thanks!

It sounds like you have a problem due to a CIQ datafield. You can just delete the "visual HR datafield" from your data screen and carry on as before until the issue is resolved.
  • May not be totally related to the initial thread, but I take this opportunity to inform you and Garmin that a user of Clarity watch face, which uses about 40kB of RAM, had an issue with stability. This user reported crashes and restarts when activating this watch face, and others complex watch faces too.
Other users reported a similar issue in reviews.

That user contacted me through Twitter, and I was able to temporarily solve his issue, which was probably due to memory overload. Disabling Smart Notifications was a solution (but that defeats the purpose of have a bluetooth connection). Erasing all notification from his phone and then enabling Smart Notification did the trick.

It seemed like having a heavy watch face + many notifications causes a crash and restart.

    Crashing datafields

Thanks, that's what I've done. Got rid of all the non-original fields and seems to be working. Btw, when a watchface crashes (not working), it switches back to 'digital', when a datafield then it switches to a timer. Maybe nothing relevant, just the default behaviour when something is not working.

    Cleared notifications

This might be quite right, with the notifications cleared out on the phone, now runs without issue (last few hours) so far so good.

I have received a couple of error logs recently from users reporting the same issue (I can confirm one of them I have is from RTz13, but I'm not sure whether I have yours). I've reported the problem to the fenix 3 team for further investigation. In every case I've seen, it's an out of memory issue, but it doesn't appear to be directly related to Connect IQ. My guess is that there's something in the v4.70 firmware that's using more memory than it should, and since Connect IQ shares memory with the system, the device runs out of memory when it tries to load Connect IQ. It may be related to something that's user-configurable, which would explain why it's not crashing all fenix 3s on 4.70. Just a guess, but that seems plausible based on what I can see in the error logs.

If you'd like to send me your contact information via private message, or perhaps email me at [email protected], I can make sure that we get back to you once the investigation is complete. I'll post back here, as well, but I'd like to be sure you've received help with the issue.

    Thanks!

P.S. I apologize if we have been less responsive than normal in the past week or so. As you all now probably know, we have been busy preparing the 1.2.0 SDK beta release!

upgraded to 4.90 did the trick?

I did the upgrade 4.90 this morning.
My more sophisticated watch faces seems to be working again without causing a reboot. The flooding of notification that used to stream every time I opened up my Ios 9 phone seems to have stopped. Still cannot use the SoccerScore app but otherwise it seems my Fenix 3 is back on track.

    working after update to 4.9

I can confirm the above statement.
i did the update to 4.90 yesterday too and the watch doesn't reboot anymore when using other watch faces.
I will keep trying other faces and data fields and report.
    Thanks for now
  • Okay, good to hear! I hadn't seen any update on my report, but it's likely that there was already a fix in for the issue.

@rotefuesse I do have your email here, by the way. In fact, your email is the one upon which I based my original report to the fenix 3 team. It was in my follow-up folder along with the other couple I had received, staring me right in the face. :)

When I use gearmin watchface and connect my watch to "connectiq app" it starts to restarting. If I disable bluetooth connection between watch and mobile phone, no problem..
