Failed to connect to the simulator

Since yesterday, when a power failure to the area stopped everything, I have been unable to run the sim. All apps build but fails to proceed with "Failed to connect to the simulator".
No other apps appear to have been damaged.
I have tried

reboot the Mac - obviously reloads Eclipse
swap the SDK to an earlier version

Running Mac Mojave, SDK 3.0.5, Eclipse Oxygen.

Any other suggestions before I reinstall Eclipse?

Try clearing out the sim's temp directory. Not sure where it is on a mac, but you'll see it and it looks like the structure you see on an actual device.

There's probably an env variable that points to temp files.

Sounds right, but locating it is the challenge.
Since the Mac is built on BSD Unix, I'd expect temp directories to be deleted on a reboot.
I'll go looking, but is there anyone out there with Mac experience?

Found some obscure clues in syslog for when I attempt to start the Sim from Eclipse > ConnectIQ > Start Simulator:

which, from searching for an executable named "simulator" appears to be the SDK simulator:

Which all hangs together but doesn't help.

Note that you need to type $TMPDIR in Terminal. It apparently won't expand to the actual temp folder path in Finder.

Yes, that points me to /var/folders/ly/qnh242bx7z98fz51w0yvjvjm0000gn/T which contains a GARMIN folder with a single, empty file plugin.log.

So I don't think it's the issue.
I moved the GARMIN folder to GARMIN.old, but that didn't help, the sim still fails wit the same error in the syslog.

No, that sounds right, but I'm not clear on the steps.

Try:
- Eclipse > Help > About > Installation Details >Installed Software
- Type "connect iq" in the search field.
- Uninstall Connect IQ IDE.

Before you do that, you could also try manually launching the simulator in the Terminal, from the SDK/bin folder, and see if it prints out any interesting error messages (like the location of a temporary lock/PID file that you need to delete.)

Sorry to be an idiot, but I did that (twice) I get to the Uninstall Connect IQ IDE and tap Finish. The dialog closes, but when I re-open Eclipse Connect IQ is still installed! UGH!

Also, running simulator from the terminal provides no more info. The Carousel bar briefly flashes (as if to display the IQ sim logo) but there is no info at the command prompt.
