Limit of ConectIQ fields in Edge devices

Hello:

I can see in my Edge 520 that there is a limit of 4 ConnectIQ fields. Is this limit for technical reasons? Is 4 the limit in the entire Edge series? Is planned another limit greater than 4 in future versions?
  • There is a technical reason I'm sure. As far as the limit, I "think" the E130 only allows 2, while the E1030, 10. Most watches, a limit of 2.

Will that change? doubtful. New devices, who knows. (well, maybe some garmin folks! :) )

The other thing to consider is the memory available for CIQ DFs. On CIQ1 devices, they can only be 16k. The E520, 32K, the E1030, 128K...
  • The Epix actually had a limit of 3 fields, the only watch I know of that allowed more than 2. But there were some bugs around the number you could install.

The Edge 130 has a two field limit as Jim says. Until recently, you could only have even 2 installed on the device at a time. I believe one of the later firmwares removed that limitation but you can still only show 2 at a time. Also, the 130 doesn't allow for apps.

Almost guaranteed the limit is there generally to limit the total resources used by CIQ data fields. With the 10 field limit on the 1030, not sure if there is combined memory limit lower than 10 x 128k. I guess they may also limit the number of fields for marketing reasons as well. I'm somewhat surprised they didn't up the limit to 3 or 4 with the Fenix 5 Plus versions.

The 520 is limited to 28.7kb... And that is PEAK usage that'll trip the DF to abort. Most all the new EDGE devices, even the 520plus, allows up to 124.7KB. My 820 can handle 10 data fields. HOWEVER, there is a well known issue that running more than just a few, even if just moderate calculations, will cause MAJOR issues if also trying to use turn-by-turn mapping from a course you've loaded. It just overwhelms the CPU and slows the map updating to an unusable crawl.
  • 28.7k is 32k minus what the VM grabs staring in CIQ2. It used to be the vm grabbed 6k, so the amount the vm uses changes.(and has been decreasing)

The FR735xt allows for 3 datafields. Some of my users are surprised when they upgrade to a newer and more expensive watch and find out the limit is 2.
