Total Distance Traveled calculation change..

Hi guys,

I used custom watchfaces that showed the total distance traveled (TDT) to track my mileage of all activities over the week. An indicator of how active I've been, usually on a graph.. However, since Garmin has changed how this metric works and didn't even mention it in the changelog(yay) it no longer takes into account biking distance and seems to only consider running and "foot" activities.

I've never developed for a garmin device or watch, so I am wondering is there a way to get the distance traveled for each activity in my history so I can build my own watchface to get back a similar metric as TDT as it once was before 9.10?

Its pretty frustrating that Garmin would change such an important metric with 0 information about it in the changelog.

thanks!
  • Specific data on activities is not available in CIQ. So there's no way to adjust for this in a watchface.

A couple of questions here. First, are you a developer or just using the custom watch faces? Second, if you are a developer, what API are you trying to use. I'm not aware of anything in CIQ that gives you the entire weeks distance in any form. The closest I see is ActivityMonitor.History.distance or ActivityMonitor.Info.distance, but both of these only return the total distance for a day in centimeters. It's possible that a developer is storing off the info and recalculating every day to give a total distance, but the distance this reports is limited to what is measured using the Activity Monitor (Daily Steps, Sleep, General movement) portion of the device. My understanding it that this is calculated directly from step based activities as it is a multiple of the steps recorded in a day by a custom step length that is calibrated by use with GPS activities. In short, I'm not sure how this would have ever included biking activity distance since we don't have access to the recorded activity history on the device via CIQ.

    Thanks,

  • Coleman. What seems happened was in the latest FW for the 935, biking distance is no longer included in the total distance for the day (ActMon.Info.distance and likely ActMon History distance). Only "step related distance" (like walking and running)
  • Exactly what Jim said. Who can I contact to question their reasoning to reduce distance history to only step based activity? I would also like to recommend the introduction of distance fields for each activity supported by your watch.

Also what about active minutes and things like calories burned? Do these also only take into account step based activities?
  • I've opened up a ticket with the device team to investigate.

    Thanks,

Hi Coleman, did you ever hear anything regarding this issue?
  • do you happen to know if at this point (945/245 era) we can finally separate the miles run from the miles walked?  I don't care to see how many step-related miles I have walked in my week.  Only if I am close to hitting my 80-100mi/week miles run ...
