Really!? Where is the detail promised?

What improvements?
What bug fies?

The phoneConnected status is working at least, but had to figure that out myself.

What else?

Come on Garmin, you said you'd tell us. How can we improve our apps etc, so we can help you sell devices? Please tell us what you have done to improve connectiq/devices firmware so that we can build better apps to make YOU money. Grrr.

Sorry but not happy (again). :-(

I am writing an app for vivoactive for interval workouts like on the FR220 watch as vivoactive does not do them. Anyway, on previous f/w version I could not actually record the activity and upload it to garmin connect. That feature (ActivityRecording) was not supported. Now it is, and now i can record FIT files, so I am slightly more happy today than I was yesterday.

    Rupert,

First off, the guys you are complaining to are trying to help you. It has been less than two days since Brian.ConnectIQ indicated that he'd like to improve the process. If you think that you'd get results in two days, you're crazy. For every software job I've held, the software and documentation is all done well before that two days.

Second, the guys that are going to have to do the additional work aren't the ones who acknowledged the problem and admitted they'd like to improve the situation. Remember that the device teams are responsible for the device firmware, and that the ConnectIQ team has no control over the behavior of other product teams.

Finally, if you think for a second that our apps are helping Garmin sell devices in any significant way, you are deluded.
  • I disagree. It would take a 2 minute chat with the other team to find out what was changed, surely a quick email would do it too. Then a cut and paste (removing any internal changes you don't wNt the public to know about). I've worked in software development for 20+ years and it's really not that difficult to trAck changes and let people know.

As for helping selling devices, perhaps not significantly but with the wide range of smart watches on the market having a decent app pool is defiantly a factor for some to make their buying choice.

    I don't think I'm asking too much.

    I tend to agree here.

We - the developers of Connect IQ Apps - are not just customers of Garmin that buy their most expensive devices! We are also a very critical key to the success of the platform. Without us, there would only be the apps that Garmin and the commercial partners implement, which will never be enough for the platform to succeed. (Just note how MS and BB try to help their developers in order to fill up there respective stores with interesting mobile applications...)

Please note that I think the Connect IQ team does a good job, and I think it is great fun to play in this game... But, I don't earn any money on this (at least yet), so as I see it, I invest a lot of hours in something that will make Garmin earn more money by selling more devices... So I fell it is in order to ask Garmin to provide us will as much information as possible about the new features and the bug fixes in the new releases so we don't have to invest time in figuring out the changes, but can use our time on the fun part - making interesting apps for the devices.

In the end, a few hours work by Garmin could easily mean many more devices sold in the end!
  • I completely agree. Glad it's not just me ;-)
  • It would take a 2 minute chat with the other team to find out what was changed, surely a quick email would do it too.

A two minute e-mail going out, but it would potentially take hours for the device team to determine and report back what they changed. If they don't keep detailed change logs, someone will have to go through the changes by hand.

it's really not that difficult to track changes and let people know.

It may be easy to do so if the details are already being tracked, but not so easy if nothing has been tracked and the information must be synthesized from change logs. I'm willing to bet that getting an accurate description of all user-facing changes is not as trivial as you're thinking.

Given that the firmware is put out by the device team, I have doubts that the ConnectIQ team even got a chance to review the release notes before they were posted. Regardless, I'm guessing that we'll see an updated description of the most recent firmware updates sometime soon.

I'm not saying that it is asking too much to request release notes that describe user-facing changes be provided with releases. I think it is a little much to expect something like this to change overnight.
  • Putting the issue of the release notes aside, it really gets my goat to see yet another post from RUPERTHAWKES complaining that something isn't done yet, or that some feature is missing or not complete to his satisfaction. Maybe I was brought up wrong, but if you're trying to help people or trying to get someone to do something for you, you don't do it by complaining or yelling at them.
  • Just bringing it to their attention.

Let's get this thread back on topic.

I have removed the activity tracker widget and use a custom watch face, but when the "move" action is triggered it shows the activity tracker widget, whereas before it showed a nice "move" message at the top of the screen. Sorry but this is a backward step. Surely this cannot be correct behavior, the activity widget is not installed yet it's displayed! Not complaining, just reporting new unwanted unexpected behavior!
