Can I add to device from GarminExpress without uploading to app store?

Build new version of watchface and want to test on device before uploading to app store. How can I do it?
  • Doesn't seem to work doing it that way with the vivo active. Copied BigTime watchface which runs fine via App Store install but when instLled manual seems to not be recognised. Ah well will have to force my changes onto all users via the App Store
  • It works fine with the vivoactive. Been doing it for days. Are you trying to load Bigtime itself, as the app name is used as the name of the watchface, and then in settings, you have to select your new watchface. Stuff from the app store is also in the apps directory, but the name of the file is a string of numbers and characters (it has something to do with versioning it seems. Right now, I have the app store BigTime and my own watchface on the VA, and in settings on the VA I can switch between each one (along with the default face).

You know that to get something in the app store, there is an approval process, right? If you put something there, it should be "ready for prime time", as it could take a few days to be approved, and that also means that anyone can download it. The USB route is the way to go until it's really ready to be used.

It sounds like the binary you're putting on the Vivoactive is built for another device.
  • Maybe the first thing to do is to use one of the samples in the SDK (C64 is a watchface), and see how that works when loaded to the VA itself, as that will help you get the process down.

It's my BigTime watch face that has been downloaded and installed in almost 8000 devices with almost all 5 star reviews, so I think the binary isn't a problem. Also it IS build for vivoActive.

    ARGH!
  • Rupert,

The number of times your watch face has been downloaded has no bearing on this discussion. Neither does the number of stars.

Where are you getting the binary .prg file from? If you are sure you are building it for the vivoactive and it doesn't appear after you correctly deploy it to the device, then something else is going on. Are you able to use one of the other watch faces from the store? Are you able to build and sideload one of the sample watch faces (as suggested above)?

Depending on the answers to those questions, you might need to look at your device. The first thing I'd look at would be to find out if the version of the firmware on your vivoactive supports ConnectIQ watch faces at all. You might need a firmware update (i.e., a beta that doesn't appear when you use Garmin Express).
  • My point was to indicate I wan't a complete newbie. As it turns out it's the crazy mess we are in regards the discrepancy between iq and firware. End of.
