Fenix 5x and sunrise/sunset - here's how to do it!

The f5x HW is different with a few things, and one is how a watch face can get lat/lon for sunrise/sunset calculation.

I explain in the post about what's going on with Activity.info and currentLocation on the f5x, and how to make your watch face run there and display the rise and set.

The key here, is once you have a lat/lon, be sure to save it in the object store so your watchface will have it in the future if a new one isn't available!

Oh, another thing. For things like heart rate, the 3.21 beta or above FW (3.30 is the current production FW) fixes that one!

I'm currently having this issue with my watch faces. I believe I don't really understand what "save it in the object store" means. Would you be able to explain how to do this?

Check the programmer's guide (search for object store) as well as the first screen shown in the ObjectStore Sample (the second screen is used to show app settings)

I found the section about it... I'm having some issues figuring out how to save and retrieve a location? "I'm getting a UnexpectedTypeException: Expected Symbol, given Number" Numbers are not supported?

I'm trying this in a function:

App.getApp().setProperty("locationLat", loc[0]);

Check the type of what you are storing. It may be a double, so use .toFloat() on it.

I'm trying this in a function:

App.getApp().setProperty("locationLat", loc[0]);

My educated guess based on your code snippet and your error message is that loc is a Position.Location object. When you use the the bracket operator on an object, it expects you to pass in a symbol corresponding to the object member you want, but you passed in zero instead.

In all the code below, replace EQUALS with the equal sign and angle brackets with parentheses, because the forum is awesome.

e.g. I'm guessing your code looks like this [roughly]

loc EQUALS Activity.getActivityInfo<>.currentLocation;

However, loc is not an array. If you want an array with latitude and longitude in degrees from the Location object, you need to use the toDegrees<> method.

locArray EQUALS loc.toDegrees<>;

I'm trying to just save and retrieve a location... It's failing when I'm reading it back to create a new location. -> (Permission requiredFailed invoking <symbol>Permission Required

I have attached a few lines of code. Would you be able to give me pointers on what would be the best approach if I'm doing it wrong?

To create a new Position.Location, you would need the Positioning permission in your app.

Also, don't forget to check if the value returned by getActivityInfo<> is null, or your app could crash under certain circumstances. (getActivityInfo() returns null if there is no current activity).

It's a watch face. The option is gray out in the config. I edited the manifest file but I'm still having the same issue.

Oh right. Then you can't create a new Position.Location, unfortunately. Do you really need a Position.Location object? Or can you just deal with the latitude and longitude? For calculating sunrise/sunset, that should be enough.
