Screen Capture Utility for Wearables

I am sure that I am not the only one here that has wondered if it is possible to do a screen capture from our wearables.

I see there is xImage for GPS devices, but is it possible to get a screen capture from a wearable ?

Looking for input. Really I could see it as a good thing for Garmin support if it was reality.
  • Take a photo with your phone. :)

Currently as I know it's not possible but with request of more people Garmin can implement it. But that should be some more way than just recording the image file to watch file system...
  • On the Edge 1000 or 520, go into Settings -> System -> Display -> Screen Capture. Then when you press the lap button, it will capture a screen shot.

I don't know if any other devices have this capability.

I forget the actual process, but you can also do it on the Oregon and Rino devices.

That is my point .. Garmin needs to add this to other devices.

It would be a great thing for both the user .. and possibly for support issues. Remember, a picture tells 1000 words.

Just think .. how people could share screen shots of their accomplishments to other users.
It would make a great Connect IQ app.

The Garmin answer to social media. It would make Fitbit shake to their core .. and make their stock hit $2. :p

As others have noted, several of the edge and nüvi devices have this. However, to your original question, I don't think any of the current lineup of wearables (fēnix, vivo, Forerunner) have this.
  • xImage and g7towin utilities can capture screenshots using Garmin Communication protocol. Since the devices with external flash introduced (along with the Mass Storage Mode) this part of protocol was omitted from devices.

Fortunately, Garmin Fenix 5 series have ability to make screenshots using hotkeys.

From my point of view, CIQ platform and development should have ability to direct access to devices and application state. There are a lot of appliances here: trace CIQ application, debugging, screenshots, etc. Maybe some day it become true and we can connect wearables as "Garmin Device".

I agree that being able to do a screen capture would be a great thing .. but honestly I do not expect that Garmin would ever do it for the lower devices. Myself I will not buy a Fenix 5 .. as I hate the round watchface.
  • I believe the feature was available on some low end devices using "back and light' buttons. The images being stored in a pre-defined folder.

On top end devices as a hotkey feature but for the FR645 Music non music no option.

Why would it not be a feature on all devices?

Images of a screen have issues of glare, resolution, background distraction or focus on everything except the screen detail in question.

  • I think it is available on most/all devices in the last few years.  Try light/back at the same time, or on 2 button watches, both buttons at the same time.

    From the fr55 for example:

  • Thanks Jim - @jim_m_58 can you confirm the images on your fr55 are saved to a folder within the Garmin device?

On my fr645m the button press combination / trigger feature does not seem to be present nor is there a folder to capture the images into - there is no hoykey option either - a feature on the 700 and 900 devices.
