CIQ 2.2: Data Fields and ANT Devices

This is from Garmin docs for CIQ 2.2:

"Data Fields will now be allowed to record new metrics from ANT sensors"

Ok, that is AWESOME. I have a Power Meter, and an electronic shifting group. There are 5 batteries among those two! And they do report battery status to the Garmin head unit... but you have to go into sensors, and intentionally drill down several levels to see the battery level.

I'd like to tap into this new DF capability to grab battery status from these sensors, so I can proactively alert when battery level reaches some threshold.

Any ideas on the technique?

In order to do this, you'll have to connect to the devices over ANT+. While this is not difficult to do, I believe it does mean that the native app won't be able to access the power/shift sensors. If this is the case it would likely make it a non-starter as you wouldn't be able to use any of the power/shift data fields or data recording if you used this data field.

That said, I thought that the edge devices monitored the battery level of devices like this and reported low battery conditions. I'm almost certain that my 920xt reports when my cadence sensor battery goes low.
