Does anyone know a better way to log strength training data for progressive weights?

Hi all,

I'm new to garmin and I've been using the watch in the gym to log sets. I've been creating custom workouts but for each set there is not option for me to progressively increase the weights, so I have to create a new exercise for every set. It's kind of redundant imo, but happy if someone has a better way around this?

Alternatively do you know how I could recommend this change to garmin?

Cheers,

Aryan

  • Hey Aryan, welcome to Garmin!

You're not missing anything. Garmin's native strength workouts treat every set as a single fixed weight/rep target, so progressive loading or pyramid sets means literally duplicating the exercise once per set. It is as redundant as it feels, especially when you're tweaking weights week to week.

For getting it in front of Garmin: the Ideas section at forums.garmin.com is the path that actually lands on a product person's desk (Connect IQ subforum, or the forum for your specific watch). You can also send feedback through Garmin Connect (Settings, Help & Support, Send Feedback). Don't expect a fast turnaround, but enough upvotes on an Idea post does move the needle.

Full disclosure, I'm the founder of Rackstrength, a Connect IQ strength training  app I built because I hit exact same walls (incl. a few others, like no rest timer that actually counts down between sets, no RPE, no real routine progression...). On Rack each set in an exercise has its own weight and reps, so a 5/5/3/3/1 wave or a top-set+backoff is one exercise, not five. Sessions write proper FIT files so they show up in Garmin Connect like any other activity, with sets, reps, weights, and 1RM tracking.

    Free to try it here:

happy to answer anything if you give it a spin.

Which watch are you using? For exercises where I know I’ll be changing weights each set, I pick a weight that’s close and then use the watch buttons to adjust it after completing the set. On my Epix, it takes no more than 3 seconds.

I’ve set mine to allow weight editing through Menu >> Activities and Apps >> Strength >> Strength Settings >> Edit Weight = On.
