Glance launcher icon not showing on Edge devices

Hi,

My app has a glance with a launcher icon. This works fine on watches, but on Edge devices the icon doesn’t seem to render. In the simulator it shows up correctly, but users sent screenshots where the icon area is just blank.

This is how it looks in the simulator:

And this is how it looks on the device in day mode and night mode (on the Edge, “Garmin” is what “KOG” is in the simulator screenshot above):

In both cases the logo is missing.

Has anyone run into this before, or do you have an idea what could cause it?

I’m close to finishing a glance enabled app and am *sure* at an early testing stage I saw the icon on the device, BUT certainly it is missing at the moment. I have updated to Edge 30.18 firmware and it was on my list of things to resolve or go back to … I will allocate a bit less frustration to that now if it’s repeatable. Certainly works in the SIm. My other thought was go back to samples apps and try to replicate in a Garmin supplied example.

Interesting. Did you perhaps update the Connect IQ SDK between the earlier testing phase and now?

Unfortunately, I don’t have an Edge device to test this myself, so at the moment it’s a bit of a back-and-forth between me and the user who is helping with testing.

Yes, that’s another change. I would have applied 8.4.1 last week sometime, good idea to revert that to test. I’m just sideloading at the moment. Edge 1040.

Have you uploaded an icon in the developer dashboard?

Add Icons for App Store on Device (Optional)

The colors in the device icons should be reduced as labeled and should only be 128 x 128 pixels.

Ah, and what do they see in the on-device Connect IQ store? Do they see the icon there?

I did not upload these icons in the app store.

One additional detail: the icon does appear when reordering glances, so it seems to be available in general, but it is not shown in the glance carousel.

It's not an SDK thing - built and sideloaded to Edge 1040 with SDK 8.3, 8.4 and 8.4.1 ... no glance icon
Same code build and sideload to Forerunner 255 shows icon OK

Thanks for giving it a try!

Another thing you could experiment with is changing the packing format, for example setting it to PNG or JPG instead of the default. You could also try disabling automaticPalette or enabling compression.

These are long shots, but at this point it might be worth testing anything that could influence how the image is packaged.

I did experience similar issues in the past on my edgeexplore2, not long after the on-device store was added (full of bugs)

No news news... I replaced my image with the default Garmin launcher_icon.svg and NO show.

I also re-installed another IQ developer's app I had previously used. NO show.

There is (why?) no Glance code in any of the SDK examples, so I can't build a Garmin example and demonstrate issue with example code. There is a weather glance example on GitHub somewhere but diminishing returns on effort now.

Leaning towards Edge firmware issue.

Well it works for me on edge1050.

Dit you include your Icon as a bitmap in your drawables.xml resource?

Dit you set your Icon als launcher icon in the manifest?

Did you implement getGlanceTheme() in your AppBase subclass?

If you answered yes three times it should work afaik.
