Can a watchface and a watch-app share variables or persistent state?

1. a watchface that displays gauges/metrics,

2. a watch-app used to send commands.

Is there any supported way to share persistent state/properties between a watchface and a watch-app (e.g., via Application.Properties or any other shared storage), or to update watchface configuration/state from the watch-app?

If direct sharing isn’t possible due to sandboxing, what is the recommended pattern for keeping them in sync (e.g., using a phone companion as a single source of truth, background services, data fields, etc.)?

Not possible. There were some devs experiencing with online key-value stores

You might use complications for that. Create a complication as a communication protocol to your watch face.

The CIQ team mentioned that they won't implement shared storage between apps for security reasons

For very small amounts of non-critical data, I guess you could use the complications feature for supported watches (CIQ 4+). The watch app could publish data as a complication and the watchface could consume it

Ofc this will only work for tiny amounts of data and other apps will be able to access the data too.

I don't think complications will work. The question mentioned data field as well
