SideLoading on a Watch`

PRGs are hidden on some devices, like my FR955. I know we can delete side loaded PRGs using Garmin Express. I quickly searched here, but I can't figure out how to install a PRG sideload I created on my desktop in VSC over to my FR955. Must be easy, but I don't know where to drop it using the mounted device, or an option in Garmin Express to do that.

  • I don't know where to drop it using the mounted device, or an option in Garmin Express to do that.

Just copy it to \GARMIN\APPS as per usual. That has not changed since CIQ was released 10 years ago, regardless of the fact that PRGs are hidden now

    If it doesn't work:

    - you may have run into the hardcoded limit on the number of ciq apps that can be installed

    - you may have built with an older version of the SDK. recently a change was made to currently supported devices so that sideloads require at least SDK 7.4.3: https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/b/news-announcements/posts/connect-iq-sdk-8-2-now-available

You can also delete them using the on-device Connect IQ store app:

  • oh interesting! Thank you. I assume yoy mean in \GARMIN\APPS\MEDIA (that is how EDGE devices work now). I can try both and see. THANKS!!

  • Just garnin/apps,

Media is where things get moved to on devices that can hide the prg files.  Specifically devices that are MTP though other device move things to media even if they can't be hidden.

  • I assume yoy mean in \GARMIN\APPS\MEDIA

No, I meant \GARMIN\APPS. Thought I was pretty clear about that. I own a Forerunner 955 and I've sideloaded apps to it many times, so I'm 100% sure about that. I am trying to be nice and help you here, but you're not making it easy.

Even if you wanted to copy PRGs to \GARMIN\APPS\MEDIA on an FR955, you would find it's impossible.

    - There is no (user-visible) MEDIA folder in \GARMIN\APPS on an FR955

    - You cannot create a folder called MEDIA in \GARMIN\APPS on an FR955

Not to state the obvious, but the most likely explanation is that \GARMIN\APPS\MEDIA exists on FR955, but it's completely inaccessible to the user. (This goes back to what you said yourself about PRGs being hidden on FR955.)

Honestly, you could've avoided all of this (not for the first time) by keeping it simple, not making unwarranted assumptions, and by actually listening to people when they try to answer your questions.

Simple (and true): PRGs are sideloaded by copying them to \GARMIN\APPS (same as it's been since the beginning), regardless of where they appear on newer Edges and regardless of the fact that they are hidden on newer watches

Complicated (and false): there's a different way to sideload apps for each of the following: old watches and edges, new Edges, and new watches. For some reason, Garmin decided not to tell any of us this

I'm gonna go ahead and assume myself that:

    - \GARMIN\APPS\MEDIA is visible on your newer Edge and you can see all the PRGs there

    - You've been copying PRGs directly to that folder either because you assume it's necessary or just because it's convenient and it works

    - Because of this, you assume there must be some other place (besides \GARMIN\APPS) where PRGs should be copied in FR955, since you don't see them in \GARMIN\APPS

But you yourself said "PRGs are hidden on some devices, like my FR955." So if PRGs are hidden in the first place, why wouldn't you just try to copy them to the same place they've always been copied to: \GARMIN\APPS

It makes no sense that Garmin would do both of the following: hide PRGs and force you to copy them to a different place than normal. Garmin hides PRGs for important reasons, but forcing you to copy them to a different place than usual would accomplish nothing.

EDIT: if you are actually forced to copy PRGs to \GARMIN\APPS\MEDIA for Edges, then I would consider that a bad decision by Garmin
