Garmin Connect Mobile App Update Process

I've given up using the Garmin Connect Mobile App to update my CIQ apps. It generally eventually works. I haven't figured out the process. Seems to go into a holding pattern in the "Queue" for some amount of time. I'm not sure if it immediately downloads to my EDGE and then waits for a reboot? Or just takes 10-20 mins before it decides to go grab the new bits? Garmin Express is instant. Anyone know what goes on behind the covers or a technique to get it to update quicker using the mobile app?

  • When you update an app, you get a message that says approval may take 1-2 hours.  For me, it's more like 15 minutes, and never has it take that long a time.

As far as queued vs installing in the mobile app, I do see it get stuck at times, but that's often resolved  by moving out of BT range for a couple minutes and coming back or turning off the Garmin and phone and then turning both back on

  • I can confirm that the Garmin Connect IQ mobile app is terrible for updating IQ apps/datafields.
I also often get complaints from IQ users that my datafield is in the update queue and whether I could fix this bug.

I then give my users the following advice:

    Turn off your device
Close the app GC IQ on your phone (see links how to close!)
    Turn on your device
Run the "normal" Garmin Connect on your phone
Let the device sync with the GC
Turn on the app CG IQ and it will boot from the scratch.

    To close an app:

    support.apple.com/.../109359

    support.google.com/.../9079646

PS. Interestingly, there are no complaints about this in the GC IQ app forums - neither for iOS nor Android.

  • Yes, it's horrible experience. I waste lot of time with it. But GE has its own issues so I only open it as a last resort (more or less before factory reset)

  • Thanks! I'll try this process next time.

  • Ever since that last outage a few weeks ago, Updated CIQ App releases seem to take just minutes to get approved. MUCH better than what used to be hours. But I'm talking about users applying those updates to their Garmin devices using GCM. Painful. Thanks!

  • The reason for no complaints there is that when you download an app for the 1st time it works. Regular users don't care about versions, they are ok with what they get. Many of them will never even update it. The bugs mostly affect devs

  • Proving the latter is a *** experience

  • Connect IQ is only 10 years old, Garmin just needs a little time to work out the bugs.

But seriously, I don't expect things to be much better in another 10 years. (If Garmin/CIQ are still around.) In 2035, there will doubtlessly be more features in both the devices and CIQ, but the user experience will still be bad. Group and array settings still won't be fixed.

Proving the latter is a *** experience

Maybe it's Garmin's way of subtly discouraging users from downloading Connect IQ apps? Kind of like how support tells users to uninstall all CIQ apps if they're having a problem?

  • It's really the CIQ Mobile app that controls these things.  Not GCM.  You want  to open that,

Also, there is a setting for your device named "Auto Update".  Make sure that is on or you won't see updates automatically..
