Terminated Console - empty console, no messages

Hello,

What does it mean when you run an app through the simulator, and it automatically terminates with an empty console and a blank simulator? With no visible logs, I can't tell what has happened.

If this has happened to you, where is the first place you would look to see the problem? I'm all out of ideas

Are you sure you app isn't running, just not displaying what it should? Say you are using black text on a black background.

I'd start by adding a few System.println calls to see what's going on.

What kind of an app? If an app crashes you should see the iq! in the sim, and if it terminated cleanly, the Garmin triangle.

That's the thing - not black text on black background, just a blank black screen. I've got loads of System.printin logs in my code that are not showing in the console as I would expect it to. It looks like this:

Also, there are no errors in the error log.

Have you closed the sim and vsc and restarted them? Your println calls should show in the debug console in vsc.

In the file menu of the simulator: delete all apps, then reset simulator, then close the simulator and run your app again. This sometimes fixes strange things

I'm in Eclipse not VSC, but I guess I could try and use it, but how would I get the simulator?
Also, I somehow managed to get the app displayed on the simulator, but I'm still not seeing any of my logs in the console which I need to check on one feature that's not working at the moment.

Eclipse hasn't been supported or maintained for years with CIQ.

You want to move to VSC. And use the latest SDK - 8.1.1

Thank you very much for your help so far. It appears that I had started to move to VSC a long time ago, because I already have the extension installed and I have the latest SDK. But how do I see the simulator? I use the command "Monkey C: Build for Device, choose the device and I can see it's building but not the visual.

That command is typically used to build a PRG to be sideloaded to a real device.

To run an app in the simulator, the typical workflow is:

1) Open command palette > Monkey C: Build Project (this will prompt you to select a device).

2) Run the current project via one of:

-- CTRL-F5

-- app menu > Run > Run without debugging

-- command palette > Debug: Start Without Debugging

Step 1) can usually be skipped, as step 2) will automatically trigger a build, but in some cases, it's necessary to manually run "Monkey C: Build Project" if you want to select a device that's different from the previous build [*].

[*] this is because the automatic build will remember the previous device in some cases, and you won't be prompted to select a device
