File Transfer Mode

Hi there,

is there a way to activate the File Transfer Mode on the Edge without plugging/unplugging USB-C?

When in FTM I can exit that mode with the "eject" icon at the bottom right of the screen.
To re-enter in that mode I everytime need to unplug and plug again USB-C cable.

Is there a way to do this via Edge System Menu? Maybe an hidden option that can put the device in File Transfer Mode?

Thanks!

  • No worries, thanks anyway, I appreciate! ;-)

  • Fr 165, sw 22.24, Garmin prevented to enter Mass storage mode, after Eject there are 1-2 seconds to observe the menu and device goes again in Charging mode (with eject available), in fact it stays in MTP mode in Windows.

I assume you mean FR165 (non-music), which presumably supports USB mass storage mode and not MTP. (I'm fairly sure no Garmin device supports both USB mass storage and MTP at the same time.)

And if you eject by pressing Back on the watch, that would exit mass storage mode, not enter it.

Did you mean to say something like this:

That sounds like a bug to me. Either that or you have a problem with your cable that causes the connection to be momentarily lost, which could be kicking the watch back into mass storage mode? (But it seems unlikely that it would happen every time you try to eject.)

What happens if you select the USB Mode > Garmin, plug your watch into a computer and answer no to the "Use mass storage?" prompt? Does it stay in charging mode (non-mass storage) mode for good?

  • FR 165 Music. I assume device cannot enter Mass Storage mode.

However, there are differences in the icons on the screen when switched on in MTP mode and when switched on in Garmin mode (screen first appears as normal, watchface, then pop-up message is charging, then after a few seconds switches to full screen mode and the eject icon is visible (there is no such icon on that screen in MTP mode). If you select BACK to eject, the screen changes to the normal watchface for a couple of seconds; Then back to the charging screen.

Yes that's what I understood you to mean. That sounds like a bug to me. Or at least it works differently than my FR955. If I press BACK to eject:

    - the watch is ejected from the computer

    - the watch exits the full screen charging UI, can be used normally, and it stays that way

Here's my full experience, for the past few generations of watches: 935, 945 LTE, 955.

    - Plug watch into power brick or battery bank:

    1) Mass Storage / MTP Mode or Garmin mode: Watch works normally, shows small charging overlay, you can do whatever you want with the watch. I'll call this "charge-and-use mode".

    - Plug watch into computer:

    2) Mass Storage / MTP Mode (default): watch goes into full-screen "data mode", and you can't do anything else with the watch.

If you press BACK to eject, the watch goes into "charge-and-use mode" (same as 1) and stays that way. Note: only newer watches (like FR955) have the ability to eject by pressing a button or swiping. Older watches like 945 LTE do not.

If you go to settings and select Mass Storage / MTP again, the watch goes back into "data mode".

    3) Garmin Mode: watch asks you if you want to go into Mass Storage / MTP mode. If you answer yes, it goes into "data mode" (exactly the same as 2.) If you answer no, it goes into "charge-and-use mode" (exactly the same as 1)
