I’ve Released a Tool That Converts AMOLED Images to MIP Images

I’ve released a tool that converts AMOLED images to MIP images. (If there’s already a similar tool out there, please let me know in case I missed it...)

This tool uses dithering to convert images so they look more realistic when used as MIP images. It supports palettes ranging from 64 colors down to 2 colors. You can use PNG images as they are (although it probably works best with 64-color images...).

For example, if you have an image created for AMOLED, you can easily convert it by setting the Original Size to 454px and the Target Size to 280px. I’ve provided four different algorithms, so feel free to download and use any image you like. Use the generated images however you wish. Let’s all have fun creating apps together!

This will be really useful only if the user can also give the destiation device (i.e: fr55) and you not only use 8 colors, but the exact 8 colors that fr55 has. Otherwise what's the difference between imagemagick or gimp and your tool?

The main advantage is that it allows you to convert images directly in your browser, so you don't need to install any extra software. I'm definitely open to considering device-specific palettes in the future if there's enough interest, but for now, simplicity and ease-of-use are my priorities.

I haven't tested the tool, but the colors should indeed match the palette for it to be useful.

but it's probably sufficient to get the distinct palettes as most of the "x" colors palettes will have the same colors, I think only for the 16 color devices there was some strangeness going on with the fenix3 palette

For a tool like this I would use the palette from compiler.json. It's easy to parse programatically, and it'll always get the newly added devices by just clicking to download in the SDK manager and then run some script that imports the palette of every device.

But none of the CIQ 4/5 devices have a palette specified in either the device reference or compiler.json (which are probably generated from the same source). This includes MIP devices such as FR255, FR955 and Fenix 7.

When this was discussed previously, was the consensus to grab the palette from an older 64-colour device (e.g. FR245/945) and assume it's the same for newer devices?

I think those have the pixelFormat instead of the palette. i.e fenix7 has pixelFormat: "ARGB2222"
