Device Update Needed

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that we have discovered an issue where the app store is telling users to update their device firmware even though they are running the current version. This means that they are unable to download until the store thinks that they have the correct version. We do have a ticket open to address the issue and the fix should be implemented soon, but we wanted to let you know as we know that you field many emails and posts from users as well. Thanks for your patience and for continuing to grow our community!

Hi, new member here, just received my new Fenix 3 HR. Same problem when trying to download watchfaces. I am crossing my fingers that it will be solved soon!
  • an unpleasant surprise

Hi, I just returned to my Vivoactive, in order to do some development for it, and was greeted with this exact unpleasant surprise.

The instructions to restart the watch, disconnect it, sync it - did not fix the problem

The instructions to delete the GarminDevice.xml file, also did not fix it.

And this issue has been going on for how long... ?

Wow, Garmin, your customers do have some exceptional patience.
  • Hi.

I solved my problem with the message of pending updates and the impossibility to install watch faces and other stuff (because I should upgrade the firmware of my Fenix 3).

In my case, every time I tried to update the firmware with Garmin Express the process ended Ok in Garmin Express, but the watch had always the old firmware, despite the fact that Garmin Express always said that the watch had the new one.

So I solved this issue by doing this (in my new Fenix 3):

    1. Connect the watch to the PC
    2. Install the new firmware that the Garmin Express has ready for the watch
    3. Check that the GUPDATE.RGN file (corresponds to the new firmware) has been copied by Garmin Express in the \GARMN folder of the watch
    4. Disconnect the watch from the PC
    5. Go to the "Configuration > System > Software update" option on the watch
    6. There the watch shows the message that there is a pending update; choose to update it
    7. The new firmware will be installed
    8. After the watch reboots you can check that whether firmware version is the good one in the "Configuration > System > About" option; it should be

No more problems since then :-)
  • Can you clarify the steps in this attempt to fix the app download issue?

Welcome to my new Garmin...I've spent the past hour trying to figure out how to add a "Simple" watch face app, but it's not so simple. Get it together Garmin!!!

On the fix suggested, forgive my ignorance, but does Garmin Express automatically install the new firmware? Both the Garmin Express (Version 5.1.0.0) shows as up to date as does the Vivoactive HR displayed (Software version 3.30). If not, what are the steps to install the new firmware?

On step 3, I looked in the GARMIN folder and could night locate the GUPDATE.RGN file referenced, not when I search the folder in case it was in a sub-folder. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your assistance.
  • On the va-hr itself, if you go to settings>system>about and then tap on "SW versions" you can see what's installed on the watch.

With the va-hr, it's actually a bit hard to NOT have the newest production FW (unless you've installed a newer beta version). It will come (slowly) over Bluetooth, or get copied when you sync with Garmin Express. As soon as the watch has the full GUPDATE file (and removed from the charger if you used Garmin Express), it doesn't ask if you want it installed (other watches do) and just installs it.

As far as the GUPDATE.RGN or GUPDATE.GCD, they are not on the watch after they've been installed into the actual firmware (they aren't needed any more)

There is beta 3.38 FW for the va-hr (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?366689-vivoactive-HR-beta-3-38-is-available-for-testing) and in that case, you do copy over the file, and once the watch is done updating, it's deleted too.
  • Still no luck installing a new watch face

Having the same issues. Not able to install the Simple Activity watch face. Getting the following error message:

This app requires an update of your vívoactive HR. Please use Garmin Express to update your vívoactive HR.

I even tried updating the latest beta version 3.3.8, but that didn't fix things. I've removed the VAHR from Connect IQ on my phone and then re-paired it, but that didn't fix things. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Is there a way to manually add the watch face outside of the Garmin Connect IQ app (like manually copying it to the watch while connected to the PC?

Forerunner 235 - app requires update

I've read the forums. I've tried rebooting my watch, removing the device from the Connect app and reconnecting and disconnecting bluetooth and pairing again. I've followed a instruction to delete the GarminDevice.xml file and letting the watch rebuild the file. NOTHING has worked! My watch version states it is at 7.1. Express reports the watch is up to date and there is no software to install. I've looked for a phone number to call support, but can't find one. I tried opening a ticket and got to a page that stated the issue could not be resolved. How does one get support? Or is there no option other than reading support pages that don't even come close to addressing the issue? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Just a quick update. Today I had an activity that I edited (changed the name) through the Connect app on my iPhone. After syncing that change, I was able to install apps.
  • Same error on my fenix 3 HR...

Tried all the steps others have listed and gave up.. Seriously Garmin, c'mon man!
