New feature discovered: IQ apps can run IQ datafields.

I'm on a F7x, when I record a Badminton session with Matcoras app it also runs the IQ datafield TX Activity Steps I have on my watch.

It's listed in the summary of usesd IQ apps (both are) and shows it's data under statistics.

Did I discover a new unmentioned feature? How do I control what IQ datafield runs with an IQ app?

  • Tbh that sounds like a bug, not a feature. If it was really a feature, Garmin would've announced it, along with a way for a CIQ app to display the user interface of a CIQ datafield using the API. But as we all know, the API does not give CIQ apps a way to display a standard activity custom data screen layout (*), much less the UI of a CIQ field. (* obviously I'm not counting the case where a CIQ app implements a custom view that resembles a standard activity custom data screen layout.)

To me this sounds like an variant of a bug that was reported a while ago, where adding a CIQ datafield (such as Stryd Zones) to one activity would cause it to run in other activities where it had not been added.

Seemingly just another example of an old bug coming back in a new form.

  • Still interesting that it's possible, would be nice if it would be controllable, displaying the IQ field is not even necessary in some cases when it's enough  to see the data in the fit file at the end.

  • Yeah it might be ok for some limited use cases, but I don't think Garmin would ever officially support the partial use of a CIQ datafield in a CIQ app.

Maybe if we don't report this bug they'll leave it the way it is now forever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
