Garmin CIQ Monetization

  • It's all under the Garmin Pay umbrella; it's just now a bigger umbrella. The Connect IQ store is using Garmin Pay for e-commerce, which supports almost all credit cards around the world. If your card is compatible with Garmin Pay for contactless payment, you can also add your card to your Garmin device (and future Garmin devices).

Likewise, if you add a card to Garmin Pay for contactless payment, you'll be able to use it to buy content in the Connect IQ store. This was turned on with the launch of Connect IQ monetization.

So is the converse true? if your credit card is *not* supported by Garmin Pay for contactless payment, then it *won't* be supported by Garmin Pay for CIQ?

This is a concern for places like Canada, where most major credit cards are not supported by Garmin Pay (for contactless payment.)

And this is the concern that most commenters in the DCR thread raised. DCR had been basically telling everyone no, Garmin Pay for CIQ is not the same thing as Garmin Pay for contactless payments; to buy stuff on the CIQ store, you just enter your credit card details (implying it's not limited to the same cards as Garmin Pay for contactless payments.)

And indeed, users have been reporting that:

    - even if they have a card added for contactless payments, they're asked to set up Garmin Pay *again* when trying to make a purchase on the store

    - someone said that their Mastercard isn't compatible with Garmin Pay (for contactless payments), yet they were able to use it to buy an app on the store

    So now I'm super confused.

  • So is the converse true? if your credit card is *not* supported by Garmin Pay for contactless payment, then it *won't* be supported by Garmin Pay for CIQ?

No. We will add it for ecommerce (with very few exceptions always supported), even if it's not supported for contactless.

For now if you've previously added a card, you may have to add it again. The team is still working on allowing users to use previously added Garmin Pay contactless cards for ecommerce purchases. This is where it gets into card networks, simple authorizations, and other things I don't understand as much.

    Thanks for clarifying this!

I will say that most people did *not* get this from the current messaging. e.g. Commenters on the DCR blog post for the GoPro app have assumed that they won't be able to use Garmin Pay for CIQ because they can't use it for contactless. One blogger posted about the new ability to buy apps in the CIQ store, and added a workaround to use with the store if your bank doesn't support Garmin Pay (for contactless).

I've seen several comments from people saying that they won't even try to buy an app from the CIQ store because their card is not supported for Garmin Pay (contactless).

IOW, pretty much everyone is assuming that Garmin Pay (for contactless) = Garmin Pay (for CIQ store).

  • I didn't even get approved my watchface app (waiting another week for "APPROVE" button hit - so hard work) but starting to regret doing anything for Garmin. Quality of their "support" is below any standards.

And how is that I didn't get early information about ongoing payment system and suddenly boom, it is working for "special" guests already.
