Connect IQ app based on phone connection

Does the Connect IQ app that sends data to AWS workflow (API Gateway -> Lambda -> ...) require user's phone keep staying near to the Garmin watch? I found some data loss if I go a little bit far away from my phone for a while, but this won't happen if I just leave far away from my phone for about 1-2 minutes. Is this issue related to watch's memory?

It needs the phone to send any data. Even if your watch has wifi, that's not connected the majority of the time. (only when you do something that requires wifi)

But why Garmin default app can leave the watch for a while? Is it because default apps write FIT file instead of directly sending data to cloud? Therefore after reconnect to the phone it just have to upload the FIT file to Connect.

Yup

(Watches with wi-fi can also sync to the Connect backend via wi-fi, which means a phone connection isn’t necessary.)
