How to force an updated datafield to load on the watch

Hi,

if I download a new version of my datafield to the garmin app store it is visible at once in the mobile's interface. Nevertheless, after forcing a sync of my mobile phone with the watch, the new version is not loaded on the watch. Is there a way to force this?

Try rebooting / reatarting your watch by powering it off and back on. Usually works for me.

If you have an Android Phone, I've not seen it auto update an app/df/wf on a watch. With iOS, I think there is is an "update available" button.

I have an Android phone. What I do is use Garmin Express, as there it can be automatic - when you sync, CIQ apps get updated.

The fact that GC Mobile doesn't update apps is a major failing of the CIQ platform, in my opinion.

That could be a very good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. I know as a developer .. you probably want them to have the latest. I personally am a fan of letting the user choose, as I hate being forced to do anything, mostly firmware updates. Newer is not always better.

There is a setting in GC on the web that lets the user choose.

I can almost guarantee you that most people think their apps are being updated automatically, especially if they see that setting. I certainly did.

Yes .. agreed. I only use my own apps and do not use Garmin ones (or other Connect IQ apps), so I am pretty safe. The only time it would be a big issue is that if the new release was for a bug fix .. and you were getting bad reviews because of an old version. Other than that .. there would be no real harm if the user used an old version. That is why I do not support devices that I cannot test myself.

I agree, it is nerve-wracking not being able to test on an actual device. As you know, I had a vivoactive hr bug that caused it to crash. The simulator did not crash.

I don't do nerve-wracking very well .. thus the support of one device for me. But did find a bug in my apps today .. that was fun. But I think that I am the only one that noticed as it was pretty obscure. Better me than someone else finding it. Now fixed .. and not one bad review because of it, that sounds like a win.

Hi,

I found a workaround how a new version of an app is forced to be loaded. In the Browser on a PC or so click on 'Download'. In my PC environment, Garmin Express starts and waits for connecting the watch to the PC. I don't do this but instead I open Garmin connect mobile and wait for synching. And voila, the app is updated. Nevertheless, this will unfortunately those guys not help who don't know that a new app is available....

I've not been able to reproduce it reliably, but I think if you click download on something already on a device and it gets updated, and then sync with Garmin Express, the watch might get confused between the two "downloads". (two different generated names for the same .prg or something) so if you see something weird after doing so, you may want to uninstall and re-install. In fact uninstall-reinstall might be the way to go if you're trying to force an update and don't use Garmin Express.
