App new versions auto-download?

Dumb question I guess, but do app store apps automatically download to peoples' devices after being updated, or do you have to update them manually? Hoping it happens automatically...!!!

I don't use Garmin express... what if you just use the Garmin Connect mobile app with Bluetooth? I've looked for an "auto update" setting but can't find one. This seems like a huge problem to me, both for users and developers.
  • Both Garmin Express and Garmin Connect website provide the option. I can name at least two cases where auto-update wasn't desirable: app went from free to paid and app was broken due to SDK transition issues. I can see the value in it but I also don't want it to be a forced option either.
  • OK thanks, found the setting in "device settings" on the GC website. The setting doesn't appear to be available from GC mobile.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be working. I updated my app last night and it still has not downloaded. Perhaps because the app is still in "pending approval" status?
  • Garmin Connect Mobile does not currently auto-update apps. I don't know whether this will change in the future.

Thanks Brandon, this is a huge limitation. As a 735XT user since May, I assumed my apps were being updated regularly as the developers upgraded them. I'm almost sure that most people think that; why wouldn't they? Aside from the limited scenarios mentioned by lcj2, most users almost certainly want their apps updated for new features and bug fixes; and the setting on GC implies they are being updated.

Is there a way to prioritize this at Garmin?
  • Wait, it gets worse. I went to update an app using GC Mobile. Clicked on the app, no Update button so I selected "View in store". From there I selected Download. Then I got an error, not enough slots available. This means that to update an app I have to uninstall it, then re-install it. Doing that, I lost the configuration of the app on my data screen
