Connect IQ SDK for Fenix 7X Pro Solar with WiFi

Hello!

I have recently bought a new watch Fenix 7X Pro Solar with WiFi and tried to update my application to be able to download it to the watch.

The latest SDK supports Fenix 7X Pro Solar (no WiFi). Unfortunately it is not enough to download to my watch.

Is there some expectation when this model will be supported by SDK?

  • They are two separate devices and you want to have support for both.  In the SDK Manager>devices you should see both.

This is from one of my apps:

  • Thank you for answer.

There are two different watch families - fenix 7 Pro and fenix 7X Pro.

So X product line are represented in SDK by only:
    - Fenix 7X Pro - Solar Edition (no Wi-Fi)
    - Fenix 7X Pro

There is no Fenix 7X Pro - Solar Edition (with Wi-Fi). Probably Fenix 7X Pro will match to my watch. I will try.

  • Again, 2 decices

You’re missing the explicit text where OP is questioning why the exact name of their product (“Fenix 7X Pro — Solar Edition”) is not listed in the SDK. You’re assuming everyone “knows” or assumes that Fenix 7X Pro is the same as Fenix 7X Pro — Solar Edition. Why you think any random Garmin consumer should have intimate knowledge of Garmin product naming schemes is beyond me. Just look at DCR’s Fenix 7 review where he points out there’s 22 SKUs and he posts an infographic that was created to explain the differences between models. You expect customers to keep all of that straight and also know how the products are grouped in CIQ?

Fenix 7X Pro - Solar Edition (with Wi-Fi)

All Fenix 7X Pros have Wi-Fi, unless otherwise stated. That’s why Garmin doesn’t market them with “Wi-Fi” in their name, as far as I know. The “no Wi-Fi” variants are special cases for users who don’t want wi-fi, which is why it‘s called out in the name of the products. IOW, you can just say Fenix 7X Pro - Solar Edition (which is what it should say on the box afaik). (I understand you’re trying to differentiate from the “no wi-fi” version.)

Garmin sometimes doesn’t make this sort of thing obvious, but in the SDK, fenix7xpro / “fēnix® 7X Pro” covers all variants of the Fenix 7X Pro family (except of course the “no Wi-Fi” variants):

    Fenix 7X Pro Solar
    Fenix 7X Pro Sapphire Solar

That’s why the friendly product name in the SDK is simply “fēnix® 7X Pro” — because Garmin expects you to understand they mean “Fenix 7X Pro family” and that it includes the two “normal” models which have wi-fi. (I don’t think that’s a great assumption tbh.)

It’s funny because the friendly name for fenix6xpro is “fēnix® 6X Pro / 6X Sapphire / 6X Pro Solar / tactix® Delta Sapphire / Delta Solar / Delta Solar - Ballistics Edition / quatix® 6X / 6X Solar / 6X Dual Power”. While this is long af, at least it’s clear which models are actually covered. So in the past, Garmin felt it was a good idea to list the actual names of all applicable products for a given SDK device, but now, not so much. Idk if this was an explicit decision or an oversight.

(Note that Quatix 7 / 7 Pro are actually based on Epix 2 / 2 Pro, and this is called out in the friendly names for the epix2* devices.)

TL;DR you sort of have to “know” which products are equivalent as far as CIQ goes, sometimes. :/

  • Thank you very much for detail explanation. I added Fenix 7X Pro variant and could install it to my watch successfully. Perfect! Yes, you are right - Garmin names are sometimes tricky.

Yeah, maybe it’s just me, but when you need detailed infographics to explain your products, maybe you’ve failed at marketing:
