System 7 : COMM for Data Fields backward compatibility ?

I am developping a new Data Field using the Communication feature without any background service, as mentionned in the System 7 Announcement :

Allow data fields to use the Communications module and listen for push notifications directly, without having to use backgrounding.

On which devices will my data field be able to be executed? Will it be backward compatible with older devices?

Sounds to me like it may only be for push notifications, and not in general, and I'm pretty sure is will only be on System 7 devices with no backwards compatibility.

I want to receive messages from a phone Companion App. It works on my Garmin Edge 540 using Beta 20.18... I hoped it would be OK on other devices as well!

Your 540 with the beta FW is probably System 7. Check "about" on the device, and if the CIQ version is 5.x.x, It's System 7.

You're right it is System 7. Would be interesting to know what happens on other devices...

Pre System 7 devices, I expect it will fail, They don't have a CIQ VM that has this ability.

Hi, how did you get it to work? I got compile error when adding permission ComplicationSubscriber

Complications are not the same thing as Communications.

You can't subscribe to complications in a data field.
