The watchface crashes on every update in ConnectIQ, but reloading the watchface works fine again. Any idea why it's happening?

Thank you Jim, I did follow the instructions (a very useful guide btw). But what I got was an impossible callstack. ERA shows the same.
You may find that the actuall crash occurred in the VM/OS, so you can only track it part of the way - to a system call.
Yeah, I see a lot of impossible call stacks. It seems the system is pretty messed up during these updates when it crashes.
I honestly can't remember that last time a user contacted me about an issue when installing an update, and I can't recall seeing it myself with my own devices. And I just checked ERA, and I don't see anything there.
There might be a couple reasons.
1) I don't update apps that often. As they are long established apps, it's generally only to add a new target device.
2) I rarely, if ever, change properties/settings for app settings, as that can cause settings to get lost/reset. If I do , it's usually for a new device, like it didn't make sense to set colors on a B&W device such as the instincts.
I've never received a complaint about updates either, but I see them all the time in my testing and I see the evidence in the ERA reports.
Last year I was able to find a repro for the most common cause of these update crashes and Garmin has fixed it on several devices. I found I had to report it for each individual watch since they don't all seem to be done by the same dev team and they don't seem to communicate with each other even when they find and fix a bug in code they know is shared by other watch teams. Very surprising and annoying. I haven't reported to the Venu and Vivoactive forums; I'm burned out on making up for Garmin's scattered dev teams.
Yes, for example, the forerunner and fenix devices are different groups, even different section of the Garmin forums.
On top of that there are devices that are end-of-life, meaning firmware updates for them are rare or don't happen at all.
Right now, the fr255,955,265,965 are getting updates but the fr945 hasn't been updated in over 7 months. It's the same for other older forerunners. And with the fenix series, it's been over a year for the fenix5 series and 7+ months for the fenix5+ series. The va4 looks to be about a year too.
New devices a quarterly update for production firmware is fairly normal.
Another "fun" update issue that I see now and then: After the update the wrong WF is displayed on the watch. Long press MENU to select WF has the correct WF selected ... So much mess with updates
