Why do widgets and glances close automatically?

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes when you open a widget/glance it closes automatically very shortly after that (couple seconds). And it seems to come in threes. I see this on all widgets/glances, including my own. There is no crash so I can't figure out what is going on. As a user, it's very irritating. As a dev, it makes my apps look bad.

This has been the case on all CIQ widgets/glances on watches since day 1.

I did my first widget before my first Garmin watch arrived (the original va) and was surprised to see the timeout, as that doesn't happen in the sim.

Time can vary by device, but it's often 1 or 2 minutes.

Not seen this and heard nothing like it from any of my users.

If you uninstall your apps and reboot the watch, does it keep happening? If not, does it start again if something is installed?

I've always seen this. It doesn't happen very often.

It happens with all widgets/glances. Well, maybe only with widgets that have a background task. It just happened with the very popular battery widget https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/a9c9b981-1f4c-4399-a270-7d6c7317893e). Most of mine have background tasks so I see it with mine now and then.

When it does happen, it will timeout in a couple seconds three times in a row and then it's fine.

My weather widgets have a background service and on compatible devices, publish complications, and never seen or heard of this from users.

But in the past, I have seen a single CIQ app mess up the system for other apps.

To track those down, you uninstall everything and add things back one at a time until the problem starts.

Hi Jim, I've got an app w/ both traditional widget and glanceview that I am testing on an Vivoactive 3 and Epix concurently. The app seems to run forever (hours and hours) on the Epix but times out with inactivity on the Vivoactive. I am concerned about battery usage for the app. I noticed last night it did not time out when I went to sleep and burned through 4 or 5 days of battery on the Epix overnight. Any tips on why it would exit on the Vivoactive and not the Epix?

If you launched it from a glance in both cases, sounds like a bug on the epix. Do you have the current FW on the Epix? Maybe try the latest Beta FW?

It seemed to report that I was on the latest version 15.77 (I am on auto-update), and yet when I did force a software upgrade it did indeed entirely remedy the issue. So, thank you for that nudge, sir. :)
