A few users complained to me that the watchface settings will be reset after updating. A few were a bit upset and angry. I can't see it in my fr255. What could be the reason for that?

Experienced CIQ users probably won't mention it, as this does happen at time and is usually no big deal. What you probably are seeing is a couple of people just got their first Garmin - it happens a…
yes, there were settings changed. But it doesn't always trigger the reset, just some random users, which confuses me.
Did you changes anything in app settings with the update? If you added or removed something that might trigger settings to be reset/

not all users get the update at the same time, ever changed their app setting (defaults are fine for them), or bother to report this.
When you changed the properties, you might have gotten a message in the debug console in VSC that setting got reset, but may have missed it.
You want to be careful when you change app settings. That's all you can do
Thank you Jim. Indeed I saw the messages in the console. Strangely, my FR255 never resets the settings but FR645 occasionally does.
Isn't it somehow a bug of CIQ?
Let's say you change settings, and when you run a sim for device 1 and you see the message, but then you run a sim for device 2. If you didn't change anything between the two runs, there wont be a message as the .set file in the sim is fine for both devices - it's a common in the sim.
On a real device, it has a set file for that device, so you get reset there
Sorry, I didn't make it clear, both Fr255 and fr645 are real devices. Furthermore, only two users reported the issue to me.

Explain to them it's because you changed how app settings are working, and in a case like that, this can happen. And keep that in mind next time you want to change things like this.
I generally have app settings really set before I publish anything to avoid this, and am reluctant to change anything after that.
Thanks for the advice, Jim.
Just to confirm, what happens if I hide some properties in properties.xml in the current version, but expose them in settings.xml in the next version?
Most of my apps, I've not changed how settings work since I first published them with app settings, starting in 2016. An exception was when the Instinct devices were first introduced. and I gave them their own properties and settings because those are B&W devices. so setting colors for them made no sense.
