Venu Sq not holding nearly as much activity hours as documented -- Am I doing something wrong?

Hi everyone,

I made an app for my Venu Sq that logs accelerometer data per second. I know the per-second setting limits my activity fit file size (less than 27 hours); however, I can only do a 5.5 hr activity before the watch auto exits the app and tells me I have low memory.

I make sure to clear all the previous activity files still on the watch by plugging it into my computer and deleting the Activity folder contents, so I am positive there are no other files taking up space.

Maybe I am not understanding or am doing something wrong? The Venu Sq user manual says the watch can store 200 hours of activity data (https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/GUID-1C3C7630-B695-44C3-AF56-949C1D4889FB/EN-US/GUID-EF643552-007C-4BDB-9EAF-B872E2FCCE84.html . I know the number of hours might be less with my per-second setting, but 200 to 5.5 is a large difference.

I was wondering if anyone had some input or clarification for my issue. Thank you so much in advance.

  • Understand when Garmin say "up to", that's ideal conditions - Smart recording vs every second for example. Smart is the default and results in smaller fit files.  If you are using fitcontrib you are writing every second in either case.

It sounds like you have a non-music venu sq, otherwise you'd look at removing the music files.  On a venu sq music, when I hook to a pc, I see it has around 3.5 gb of total storage.  I expect that's much lower on the non-music version.

In other words, the "up to" is likely with smart recording on a music device and no CIQ apps involved.

  • Thank you so much.

The size of my 5.5 hr file is ~ 7,400 KB. Is it safe to assume that the Venu Sq's limit to generated (and not uploaded) activity file size is about 7,400 KB?

  • What is the total size of storage on a non-music Venu sq?  Like I said on the music version, it's about 3.5 GB.  You are probably seeing a size in the MB range, so much smaller.

  • For a non-music Venu sq (what I am using), the total storage size is 3.4 GB. So not too different from the music.

  • I have low memory.

This is not referring to "disk" space. It's referring the "RAM" (working) memory.

The Venu Sq user manual says the watch can store 200 hours of activity data

Garmin says this about many of their devices and it doesn't seem to be 200 hours at all.

The Edges are typically used for activities that are multiple hours long and people only have issues with them when the number of files is large (the total hours is much larger than 200 hours). And the older Edges had trouble dealing with activity files that were around 24 hours.

I make sure to clear all the previous activity files still on the watch by plugging it into my computer and deleting the Activity folder contents, so I am positive there are no other files taking up space.

It's not a (disk) space issue.

It could be that the devices write the activity data at then end of the activity. Even if it saved the file periodically, it still could need to keep the whole data set in memory.
