Watch Touchscreen CIQ

I wrote a great data field for touchscreen EDGE devices that "tap" into the touchscreen capability to allow interactions with cyclists.

I'd like to include touchscreen-capable watches (Forerunner, Fenix, etc). But I'm not sure if it works on watches. Toybox doesn't have a "supported devices" listing. My DF will need a big UI rework to adapt to the smaller/round screens but this will really help runners too. Thanks!

As far as I know, onTap is only available on touch Edge devices. You can try a watch in the sim but I doubt you'll see it. There really aren't any buttons available on a watch without touch.

That's just for watchface touch and hold events and it's intended to support opening an app when the associated complication is pressed. (That's why it's only supported on the newer touchscreen watches which support complications.)

Data field touch events are only supported on Edge devices, not watches.

ok. i thought I had read that in the past. really a shame Garmin doesn't support data field touch events on watch-based devices. really a silly exclusion. I wonder if button actions are supported? I could allow for that for watch interactions.

No, there aren't enough buttons to support button actions for data fields. Every single button already has a use during an activity.

There is one hacky "interaction" I've used - a quick onHide() / onShow(). From the user's POV, they need at least 2 pages, and they need to navigate away from the page with your app and back in certain amount of time (e.g. press UP, DOWN quickly). I use this to switch "pages" in a full-screen data field, but I think it's very clunky.

The other option is on-device settings. One limitation I found with on-device settings is that the view you push won't be refreshed unless the user presses a button, which means it's useless for any kind of live data (so you can't abuse on-device settings to provide some kind of secondary live data view for your data field app.)

You could also try to respond to quick stop/start of activity or double lap press, but of course that affects the user's activity in ways that might be undesirable.

On touch+button devices (955,965,f7, etc) they have a setting to turn off touch when doing an activity.so in that case, you are left with only buttons.
