Why would you want that? If in watch mode GPS is always Off and WiFi will only be active if you just finished an activity (and sync info will be shown, no matter what watch face you're using).
I'm not exactly sure how those numbers are calculated, but it goes something like this: - take the number of steps taken outside of activities and multiply that by the set step length . For step length there's a default that you can override in Connect; - add to that the distance in the activities of the days.
I think there's a bug in this calculation regarding distance in non-walking profiles, but I never really investigated it. I'm very sure there's no GPS involved in activity tracking.
TuenMo is correct. While in watch mode the GPS isn't on. The distance is available by the steps taken and the user's step length, which can be adjusted using Garmin Connect.
