Switching GLONASS on/off for IQ Apps possible?

Hello,

To my understanding the Position.enableLocationEvents(...) does not specify GPS or GPS + GLONASS. Different to other activities like running, cycling there is no GPS settings for IQ-Apps on the watch (at least Forerunner235) either.

So, what GPS mode is used in those apps? Anybody has insight? Can this be configured?

Thanks
Martin
  • I think the general preference for Glonass is accepted for CIQ apps too. Unfortunately, the platform doesn't give a lot of GPS data to apps such as satellite count, prn numbers etc...
  • Connect IQ doesn't have any direct control over whether GLONASS is enabled. It just asks the system to turn on the GPS and get position information, and will respect the system settings.
  • Thanks for replying. Still a little unclear to me.

So what is the system setting? Is this the GPS/GLONASS setting kept from the last applied running or cycling activity with GPS on?
  • Some devices, such as epix, have a System setting that allows you to globally enable or disable GLONASS (WAAS/EGNOS is also commonly available as a setting). Assuming your device has this option and it is enabled, when you call for a position in CIQ, it will include GLONASS when obtaining your position. What you cannot do with Connect IQ is specify either at runtime or with app settings whether GLONASS will be used. These are System-level settings, and CIQ simply uses whatever the System is set to use.
  • Actually I'm testing on the Forerunner 235, and this watch does not seem to have a global GPS setting. GPS settings are only specific to preset activities (Menu->Activity setting->GPS, and this only for running, cycling, indoor, other).

I understand connect IQ is not able to influence the setting. But still, what GLONASS parameter is actually used when my own app is starting the GPS?

    Sorry to be persistent ...
  • On the 235, you have three settings: Off, GPS only, and GPS+GLONASS. Connect IQ will respect whether you have it set to GPS only or GPS+GLONASS.

I see on the VAHR there is a setting for GPS for the native run / walk app. Does that mean it is possible to use Glonass on / off in a CIQ app on that model ?

Today my GPS was bad bad bad .. though it may have been my fault. :o
Should know pretty soon on that one.

What if I have set it to Off for walk, GPS only for run, and GPS+Glonass for cycling? Which setting will be used for a CIQ app?

It would be good, if one can enable it system wide on the vivoactive hr, like 1s data recording. Then it should be used by ciq apps, too, or am i wrong?
I read here somewhere, that for some watches there is a global system wide setting to enable glonass. But for vivoactive hr definitely only per app in the native garmin apps.
So if the user uses a non native ciq app, he probably will have only normal gps set active.
  • That's a very good question about the vivoactive HR--I wasn't aware it worked this way. Let me check with the device team and I'll find out what we should expect.
